GH1 kit lens OIS - really works?

hi folks,
I'm about to pull the trigger and get a GH1 in a day or so - but I'm wondering if I should forget about getting the kitlens and get an Oly 14-54 Mkii instead.

I am thinking that for what I plan to shoot, the kit lens is too slow, and the Oly 14-54 gives me a wide lens at f2.8. Its not OIS, however, but is this actually a big deal? Does OIS actually make a big difference while shooting video?

Thanks / RandyQ

I've sold the kit lens and currently only use manual lenses (Pentax K-mount and m42). None of them have have IS but I've never had too many issues while shooting with my Sigma 17-35. However, my 50mm 1.7 is almost impossible to handhold because at that length there is just too much shake.

I can't comment on how much easier OIS will make things but I can say you will get usable footage as long as you stay fairly wide.

or use even the cheapest camera support

Yes, of course if you're using a tripod or stabilization you won't notice (duh) but for anything hand held, if I'm using my manual lenses, I most definitely notice it's gone, mostly in videos, but in stills sometimes too.

yeah there is no handheld excpet with something like a spiderbrace with the GH1

you can see your pulse if you use a long lens

and of course you want to be able to go hand held and use whatever lens the story dictates

so ... spiderbrace for handheld

I'd recommend the 1 or 2.

I think the 2, because if I reacall correctly, the 2 mounts farther back because it's made for cameras likethe XL2 with a side eye piece.

I prefer to have the GH1 a litle further away on the 1 so i can see the LCD and around the LCD.

I recommend these full shoulder ones over the mini. I haven't used the mini and while i'm sure it would help with some of the stuff we're discussing here, the full shoulder support will provide more stability and give the look of a larger camera by forcing you to turn at the waist to pan (as you would with a broadcast camera or a 16mm or 35mm) rather than at the wrist. You could also strap a audio recorder or something to it as well.
