GH1/GH2 suitable for underwater videography?

the best underwater footage I've seen from the GoPro (posted by the company itself) doesn't seem to match what a large sensor camera like the GH1 , the GH13, or even the E-PL1 can do.

Hi Bill,

Unfortunately for GH1, GH13, GH2 camera there aren't professional underwater videos published. And I think we will never see it. The GH1 is EOL, maybe we will have some shot for the GH2, Nauticam has a new housing.

While for land shots we have zillions of professional example with GH camera, the video you posted are nearly the only one. Moreover they are nothing more that experiments made with home made housing. They are shot just few meters deep where you can get the same results with your cellphone.

It's a matter of fact that there are thousand of professional uw video shot with 5DMKII and 7D.

The main problem shooting wide underwater is that you need high DOF. Underwater shoots with shallow DOF are plain ugly. So shooting at 1/50 or 1/60 and not less than F4 means you need to increase the ISO.
How the GHx will perform? I would like shooting uw with my GH13 but I don't like to be a guinea pig spending 1500$... I still have to see some real world examples.

I hope telesteric will give us some example :cheesy:

If I remember well, the latest gopro camera incorporates a flat lens so the modding should be unnecessary now.

No. GoPro do not have a Flat lens model or a flat lens accessory, only available after market or DIY. All but the DIY vignette in 720p mode (R3).

GoPro requires a complete new housing to incorporate a FULL RANGE flat lens.

I believe you want a small image sensor for underwater video, DVSLR's are not ideal.

Actually, tipycal camcorder sensors are smaller than GH sensor but camcorders are capable of wider stops (f1). As a said it is plenty of uw video of 5D (full frame) and 7D (APS-C) but there are no real example of how the small m43 sensor perform underwater.

Bye

Backgrounds are usually blurred underwater anyway so shallow DOF is useless. Real camcorders are best underwater and much easier to control.
