GH1 freezing when trying to install new firmware

Ok - I've just taken the plunge and installed a hacked firmware using Ptools 3.36, but I've got a pretty significant problem.

I checked the 'Interface Language' box 'cos I thought 'you never know when you might want the interface in another language'. Yeh, I know - stupid. And even more stupid, I neglected to change from the default of Japanese, so now my interface is Japanese. I DO NOT SPEAK/READ/WRITE IN JAPANESE. Minor problem.

So I go back to PTools and set the language to good ol' English and save a new version of the firmware to the same SD card I just used, overwriting the last one.

I put the card back in my GH1, press the Play button and it just freezes. Every time. Every time. How the f%*& am I supposed to change my firmware again if it just freezes?

What the hell is going on. Have I fallen for some big joke? Have I just made a simple error that can be easily corrected, or what?

My GH1 still works, but I can't change the firmware. Or read Japanese

Please help.

For what it's worth, when first installing a hacked firmware, and on subsequent attempts, 'Version Change' and Version Compare Patch' have both been checked. I am going to try another firmware version with 'Version Change' unchecked. But still want any help/reassurance that's going, please.

I haven't got any further with this on my own, so I'm going to add a bit more detail about what I did first time round:

Using PTools 3.36 I loaded the Panasonic Firmware GH1__132.bin and checked the following boxes:

- Version change (version increment set as 1)
- Version Compare
- Third-party battery
- Interface Langauge (and didn't notice that it defaulted to Japanese)
- 30min limit removal
- Native 24p/25p
- NTSC->PAL Conversion
- Video Bitrate Adjustment Simplified (adjusted to 50000000
- Overall Bitrate Adjustment (adjusted to 52000000)
- Limiting Bitrate Adjustment (adjusted to 60000000)

I then saved the modified firmware as GH1__133.bin, copied it onto my SD card and carried out the update in-camera.

The interface language changed to Japanese and the firmware version changed to 0.0

Now, when I try updating firmware again, using a higher version increment and a filename of e.g. GH1__135.bin, nothing happens when I hit the Play button with the SD card inserted (having deleted all but the newest firmware from the root folder) other than the camera freezing, not responding to any button presses and requiring the battery to be removed.

Not sure what else there is to say at this point. Ecept for 'help', again.

Ok - I think it's ****ed. I don't know why, I can't find any other threads from people experiencing the same problem, so why the **** has it happened to me? The initial update seemed to work fine, but now nothing I try is working.

I've tried using a different SD card with an unpatched Panasonic GH1__132.bin firmware and the same thing happens - camera freezes.

Suggestions?

Waddya know - I've fixed it.

For whatever reason I need to use a freshly formatted sd card to overwrite previous firmware hacks.

Camera is now back in English - firmware version 0.0. But looks like I need some faster SD cards for the C settings - recorded about 4 seconds 1080p and it told me the card couldn't keep up (Class 6 Transcend 8gb)

I had a similar problem, maybe it also explains your situation. I had a hacked firmware with Native24p enabled. I made some movies. Then upgraded the fw and did not check Native24p. Then I wanted to upgrade again, but the cam froze. The reason was that the last item on the card was a 24p video which the camera could not play with the new fw (as N24p was not checked). As you need to go to Play mode to upgrade the fw, it just froze.
