GH1 GH1 For Live Stage Performance

Hi,

Newbie here. Will be shooting a live stage dance performance with complex lighting and fast moving objects.

My equipment - GH1 (GH17 hacked with 40mbps High Reliability Patch) + Panny 14-140mm lens. Did a test run during rehearsal and didn't turn out too good especially in landscape shooting of the full stage. Camera seems not able to catch up with lighting and action, it blown lot of highlights and AF couldn't keep as well during panning/zooming, also colors are very mild (even in vivid mode). It's too late to modify my equipment - getting manual lenses and etc. BTW, camera is set at in accordance with recommended setting of this forum with iExposure off.

Please advise any solution to this. I thank you in advance and appreciate your feedbacks.

I've had it on combined (uppermost selection). I've done a few concert recordings, but only manual lens. The lens had non-clicking aperture ring, so I could change aperture dynamically on the fly by hand depending on the lighting. Hack settings were lpowell max. latitude and results were good, except in some scenes my manual focus job did not hit the bull's eye every time. Still close enough, though, and the end result was satisfactory.

I shot this band for several years as they were friends. For years Deb also blew out because of her fair skin tone and light blond hair. Thsi was the very first time I shot them where she was in full on spot light and didn't blow out. I was in SPOT for the first time but as you can see when she steps out, she goes right back to Casperette the Ghostette. Anything other than SPOT and the whole video would have her blown out in this situation.

It seems no complete resolution to this except perhaps with a pair of quick hands and a manual lens.
Thank you all.

Using histogram can help. It sits a bit on the way on the display, but you only need to see the brightest lighting scenario and adjust aperture or ISO for that. Any lighting scenario that falls below the brightest may require adjusting the aperture or ISO on the fly for best results. For this I used old Soviet classic lens Helios 44-2 (58 mm, f2). It has stepless aperture ring, and it was enough telephoto to allow filming from about fifteen meters away from the performer.

Not bad. Drummer has a solid beat too.
