GH1 files in vegas...help!!

I am using vegas 9 to edit a project using gh1 files. What should I transcode the files to so that vegas handles the files better, but little quality is lost? Or, would it just be best to build a dynamic RAM preview? This is my first dive into HD footage...Thanks in advance for any help

Most folks with GH1's (including me) just drag/drop the .MTS files onto the timeline and go from there. That's one of the great things abou Vegas - it handles .MTS files directly - no transcoding needed.

Others here can tell you about 24-pulldown and all that if you are into filmic stuff.

I can handle one track of mts files fine. Its when I have a multicam shot...just 2...that the frame rate is simply unusable for editing

what do you mean by "the frame rate"? your framerate is established by the project settings you dictate based on the footage you're editing, and will be consistent thru final render.

do you mean your footage is choppy when trying to play it in the preview window? Because that's where transcoding can help.

What are the specs of your editing system? Maybe it's not powerful enough to handle decoding 2 .MTS files at once while maintaining a smooth framerate. The .MTS format is highly compressed and requires a hefty processor/RAM/disk I/O system.

That's the problem, it is not powerful enough to handle the HD footage. Looks to me like the best solution for me is to transcode the file to an avi, edit, then replace the footage with the original files for rendering. Thoughts?

everything was right until the last part. what do you mean by "replace the footage with the original files for rendering"?

if you transcode to a more robust, yet efficient .avi like Cineform BEFORE editing, then you would render for which-ever medium your going for, be it web, dvd, bluray...each output will require a different render. so what kind of project are you working on specifically, so we can help you make these choices easier?
