GH1 AVCHD Hack -- only 14Mbps?!?!

Okay I hacked the firmware using PTool 3.40d and the MJPEG is now cranking out a whopping 60Mbps. Cool!

But my AVCHD after hack is only cranking out 13.5 if I'm lucky. Granted I understand that it depends on what I shoot and conditions and whatnot. But really?!?

I used MediaInfo to read the RAW MTS file, instead of the transcoded file.

Any suggestions? Or is this normal?

Okay, thanks for the quick reply.

Thats about it for AVCHD. I did not show what I have set for Mjpeg, since I have that right.

No luck...

Looks like it still kept it the same. I wonder if it has to do with the fact that the scenes are not that complex that I'm shooting. I understand the the codec is variable, but I thought at he very least it would shoot higher than 13mbps. One clip is only at 10.

Yes, in the end actual bitrates depend on scene complexity, as AVCHD is a "smart" codec. Shoot was lens cap on and bitrates drop down to 2Mbps. Shoot some grass on your lawn or object with intricate patterns and you'll see rates go way up close to limit specified in PTool.

Sweet. Thanks for the help. I shot again moved the camera around some more, shot in bright light and increased the shutter and had it go up to 20.

Again, thanks!

The data rates will be much less in SH mode even though it is 50/60fps.
DOF will affect it
Wide angle lens will include more detail
Accurate focus will increase the rate
Slow pans high rates........ whip pans lower rates
Bright images high rates ........... dark images low rates
ETC

Shoot the Pappas star chart I guarantee you it will go up significantly if you ptooled correctly.
You need high detail to make the camera work.

I disagree that you NEED high detail to make the camera work to produce great images. The low detail scenes also look great with the data rate that the variable AVCHD codec selects as demanded. Any motion even on low detail scenes will see the data rate soar. yes.

The static lock off shots around 9mbps look like 2mega pixel stills when you step thru them.

I've also been freezing my cam, telling my wife it's a picture, pressing play and watching her jaw drop lol... Nice little trick.

I think he means make the camera work in terms of bitrate, not producing great images. Those last few words you added really changes the context of it all=)

OP - you have yet to post what scenes you were actually shooting, whether its low light low detail or daylight low detail or high detail when you got those low bitrates. for 60Mb settings what you are getting is quite low even at 20Mb

can someone tell me what the bit rate of canon 5d mkii and Red One is?
It has been said before and it is worth repeating again: not all encoders are created equal. If arithmetically XX.X is larger than YY.Y doesn't mean that MJPEG footage with bitrate of XX.X Mbps has better "image quality" than AVCHD footage with bitrate of YY.Y Mbps. 5D has a different AVCHD encoder, Red One shoots in RedCode. Bitrates don't mean anything when you start crossing boundaries.

Thank you MR Fanny. I shot a regular indoor scene and averaged around 22Mbps. Shot the Pappas Star chart I got 43Mbps. Lockdown shot of grass causes freeze with 24p native AVCHD.
