GH1 Availability?

I can currently get hold of a small stock of GH1's in Taiwan via my girlfriend.

If anybody is interested please PM me and I'll do my best to deliver it to you wherever you are in the world.

do they stock red pal ones by any chance? and what is the going rate?

cheers. by the way your low light vimeo clip with that ninja star lense rocks...if it is indeed your clip.

Firstly, sorry I haven't replied, I'd been checking the thread but didn't notice it went over one page and thought nobody had replied.

@commanderspike - Do you only have japanese NTSC cameras or do you have any PAL ones in English?

And thanks to Martti for the lighting tip - I would have been really annoyed if I got one to find that there is this problem. I guess I'll try to get one from a PAL country!

@plasmid - Shipped from where? Full box w/ manuals, etc? And are you on eBay? (Just that ebay is better to make a safety judgment than off somebody on a forum with a mere 3 posts...)

Thanks everyone.

keep in mind the euro PAL has 30min recording restrictions if you don't think you will ever need to record that long.

I am now considering getting one brought over by friends when they visit soon either from singapore PAL or taiwan NTSC english. does anyone in australia know if they will get hit with customs tax as a tourist or does that only work when you come back from a holiday? eg me to singapore buy a gh1 and back?

If there's a GH1 in or around San Jose it's at

Keeble & Shuchat Photography
290 S California Ave Palo Alto, CA 94306
(650) 327-8996

The folks their are really knowledgeable and friendly to boot. I met with them last week at the DCS event in Mountain View, they had a first shipment of camera with a wait list. Sold them all, and supposedly have a second shipment that is either about to arrive or has just arrived.

Good luck.

I'm happy to report the US GH1s are trickling out, I just received my 2nd camera.

Thank Ilya. From what I've heard of problems with having NTSC cameras in Australia I think I might try to get a PAL camera. The 30 minute recording restriction doesn't particularly matter to me. For projects I'd never need it, I only see I'd ever record that long if I was recording some kind of event.... (like a birthday, speech, presentation, etc.)

@saaby - What store did you buy it from? If they have PAL models I could try buying one to have it shipped...

And can anybody help me out to suggest any stores in singpore or hong kong (Or any PAL country with GH1s in stock) that may ship to Australia? I read that somebody purchased one for HK$11,600 = AUD$1,829 = USD$1,496. That's sounds like a pretty good price to me!

and MR Fanny - If you are smart about it, you could get it in without declaring it. Up to you if you do that or not, it's still illegal.
Just be vary careful getting through customs. If Singapore customs are anything like Australia's, they will think something suss is going on if you are staying for a short amount of time, and they may well do thorough drug searches on you. If you go there just to buy the camera, bring some kind of proof that you are buying the camera and proof of your acommodation, return ticket, etc. Btw, Singapore airport guards are armed with big guns, pistols and machettes (just in case all else fails...). Just thought you might want to know =P

You know what guys, maybe I might try to work something out for you. The main obstacle is shipping; the GH1 box isn't small, and with volumetric weight in play the shipping can kill you.

Not making any promises, just an offer to help.

ha...yeah i've seen the automatic guns at the airport. nah im not planning to fly over just to buy the camera. Friends and their relo's are coincidentally coming to australia some time in august so my main concern is would they get hit with any customs tax if they brought it over as a tourist?

Thanks YSLEE, i'm sure a few aussies would appreciate your efforts. Bear in mind recipients may get stung with 10%customs tax for items shipped in that's generally over $1000 i think. If the tax and shipping doesn't add up too much then your onto, or should i say us aussies are onto a good thing possibly.

thanks for the offer yslee.
@MR Fanny - I think its totally ok for rellies to bring a camera to australia with them and not be taxed... since it is theirs (well... sortof...) and they are just bringing their own belongings with them, I doubt they would be taxed. Then they'll just give it to you and everything's all hunky dory. I may be mistaken though, but I don't think a visitor to australia will eb taxed for bringing a camera into the country...

Ok guys, here's what I worked out:

Camera is S$2200.

Shipping is under S$200, via a courier service with insurance.

Altogether it should come under S$2400.

I've got the the shop's buy-in of sorts but they want to know how many here are serious first.

Can't wait until all this talk about "how to get" goes away, and we start talking about "how to do"...

@saaby - What store did you buy it from? If they have PAL models I could try buying one to have it shipped...

A scammy, awful place. I can't refer you to them in good conscience. They said they had it in stock so I decided to play my luck, knowing full well what kinds of risks I was taking. I got the camera pretty quick really, all things considered, but yeah -- it was PAL.

They're supposedly shipping me a replacement yesterday, so it might ship out some time next week.

I just snagged a camera through Crutchfield (I _have_ to have a camera by next Friday), so I don't need this one anymore, but they'll be total poop-heads about returning it.

So if it's NTSC, I'll offer it here for my cost, then if no takers, onto eBay. If it's PAL and you want it, I'll send it to you for my cost. If it's PAL and you don't want it, I'm going to get my credit card company involved.

@saaby - at what price will you sell the camera for if it is PAL? Did you pay $1500? (RRP) And btw, I think some other Australians on this forum would be happy to buy a PAL camera off you due to its high price here... might as well try before you get your credit card company involved!
and @yslee, I'm PMing you now =)
@j - Now that I've actually tried to get one I really see what you mean and I can only agree with you. If only Panasonic predicted the demand for the GH1 better!

yslee....can you get them in red in singapore? so there is an international warranty card yeah?

Tim....best deal yet..ha tell me how you go with customs tax if you go ahead with it.

Hi, I haven't seen the red one, but I had a conversation with the local Panny rep and he did say there would be other colours with the second shipment. I'll check back with the shops for stock on the ground when I can.

@saaby - at what price will you sell the camera for if it is PAL? Did you pay $1500?

I love how this twitter @ thing has caught on.

Yeah I paid...they had this exorbitant shipping cost...but the camera was actually a little less than $1500 to begin with...I'd have to sit down and look at the numbers, but yeah, I'd just sell it for what I paid (Including the shipping I paid) and then shipping to you. I'm not looking to make a profit, and if you take into account the cost of time I'd actually be taking a little loss -- but that's fine, I can afford that. I can't afford to take any out-of-pocket loss. They were supposed to absolutely send one out on Thursday. Here it is the end of Monday, and I haven't received a shipping notification from them...so we'll see when they finally get around to sending one.

Just like that...shipped today (Only 3 days late). Ground. I'm going out of town Friday, it might not even make it here by then. Fortunately there will be somebody home to snatch it next week, if it takes that long, so I'll have to rely on their eyes to tell me whether it's NTSC or PAL.

saaby, I'll wait until I know from you if the camera is PAL or NTSC before I go ahead for a purchase.
I also have a friend from school that has relatives visiting Singapore soon, so that's an other option I may take to get my hands on a GH1.
And by the way, I've used @ to address people since about 2003... well before twitter =) I feel kinda odd using it now because of twitter taking it over!

Tim

Hey Fanny, I finally managed to check with a few shops. Currently there are no red GH1s in Singapore right now. Currently Panasonic has already done 3 shipments worth of GH1s in, so the colours may not come soon. According to one guy I spoke, supply is still quite limited.
