GH1 and GF1 firmware hack for dummies

Hi
thanks for this forum and members contributing, my GF1 is finally usable. Before the video quality was a shame on Panasonic.

Same question >>> typo, which number should I use?

Click on Overall Bitrate. In the box at the bottom enter 60000000. (*NOTE* COUNT THE ZEROES. ITS 56 million)

I used 60million and maybe it created problems, everything works only problems with Full HD recording in AVChd, getting strange flimmering. everything above iso 100 records black.

thanks

.. "My question is about MediaInfo"....

I'd be interested to find out about this also... as I'm experiencing the same thing...

Cheers

Thank you very much for your post :)

question: what is supposed to happen in A or S mode ? should the aperture/shutter change in the middle of recording or just continue with the values of the beginning of the video?

In A or S modes, the exposure is kept constant, so values such as ISO, aperture and shutter are changed if the light changes. This is standard behaviour in all cameras.

Is with GF1. (sorry I did not mention).
I will install the hack again and start again (probably I have made some error).
thanks

My new GH1

My new GH1

I have just bought a new GH1 kit (last week) here in Oz and it has firmware v1.32. Can I apply the hack and get the better video options? Serial number is WE0FD001001.

Hey, I followed your instructions for the GH1 Hack but when I record in AVCHD @ FHD I record for about 3 seconds and it says: "MOTION RECORDING WAS CANCELLED DUE TO THE LIMITATION OF THE WRITING SPEED OF THE CARD". I am using a 32gb ScanDisk class10 card that records @ 30MB/s. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

Must be a dummy

Must be a dummy

First off, this is an amazing group and my problems aside, props to everyone who both developed and is supporting the hack through this forum.

That said, I'm dead in the water!

I followed the directions but must have missed the direction to click "Prevent Version Compare".

I did select "Version Increment" and entered "3". Saved the file as GF1__123 and upgraded succesfully.

Unfortunately I had set the MJPEG width incorrectly and wanted to go back in and fix it.

Now, the camera won't recognize the new file (I've tried naming it everything from GF1_124 to GF1__126. Nothing.

Doesn't seem like there is a way to revert either.

Can anyone help or did I brick my firmware?

Thanks.

Select both Version Incr and Version compare and enter 4, or 5.
OR
Select just Version Compare and the Version incr does not matter.

I have the GF1, body firmware 1.0. it's an '09 camera so I assuming it can be updated.

some dummy questions :)

1. Does the hack produce sharper/better photos or it's mainly for video?

2. If do mainly photos and casual video, should I still go with hack?

3. If I update to Panasonic FW 1.2, I can no longer use the hack?

4. Once hack is used, it cannot go back to default?

5. How much file space does having higher bitrates eat up? I'm assuming higher bit rates
is for you pro video guys wanting the high quality video.

1. No change to stills, just for video.
2. If your video needs are casual, I would stick with stock firmware and just use Creative Movie mode when shooting video. The quality will be excellent.
3. I believe so.
4. No, you can always return to default.
5. More space is needed for higher bit rate video, but exactly how much is impossible to predict, as it varies according to settings, shooting conditions, etc.

It sounds like you would be better off not doing the hack. Unless you really know what you're doing, and you pay attention to getting a number of settings just right every time you shoot, it's possible to get worse video quality with the hack than just shooting with the stock firmware. If you just want to be able to press the video record button and get good video under most conditions, stick with stock. Even without the hack, the GF1 is capable of excellent video.

Thank you for the great advise. I'll stick with the stock firmware.

I don't think the GF1 has a creative mode in video record, does it? will check the manual.

Creative Video mode is right there in the shooting mode dial on top of the camera. It's the one with the movie camera icon. Always turn the dial to this shooting mode when shooting video and you'll be in like Flynn.

if I read the manual correctly, you can't change any aperture or shutter settings for GF1. I know the GH1 can.

Yes, unless you hack the firmware, you don't have manual control of shutter speed or aperture in Creative Movie mode (I mistakenly called this Creative Video mode earlier).

Before Vitaliy's hack, there was a method of locking down shutter speed and exposure in Shutter Priority mode and then shooting video using those settings, but it's sort of a halfway measure compared to the full manual control you get from the hack. I don't really recommend it -- it was just the best you could do with the GF1 at the time if you wanted more manual control than Creative Movie mode gives you.

If you're not going to do the firmware hack, I do recommend simply turning the knob to Creative Movie mode and just letting it take over. This mode does give you limited control over aperture (the somewhat confusing "blurry checkerboard or in-focus checkerboard") but I wouldn't worry about aperture if you're just shooting casual video as you said. I have some home videos I shot with the original firmware, no special settings or legacy glass, just the 20mm pancake and Creative Movie mode, and I still marvel at how good those videos look. Yes, the hack takes the camera to the next level, but it sometimes gets lost in the discussion that the GF1 is plenty capable of shooting great looking video right out of the box. Have fun.

GF1 first time hack

GF1 first time hack

I trying to hack my GF1 for the first time.

Is still updated the information on the first post?
I did not understand the version compare and increment and the difference from the first hack and subsequent modifications.
Could you explain me the procedure or indicate me an updated link?

Could I use some existing settings aso the first time?

Thank you
