GH1 and Final Cut Express Help

I am using Final Cut Express as a learning tool to advance to Final Cut Pro. The downside (for now) is that there is no 24p timeline in FCE as there is in FCP, so for now I have to use a 29.97fps timeline. I know that this is Taboo to most purists, but it is the way things are for now.

I am using an NTSC and LPowell's reliable 40mbps patch, and I didn't tick 24p native. I don't see any visual problems, but I would like to hear from somebody that is using the GH1 with Final Cut Express to see how things worked out for them, any problems I might not be aware of?

I'm PAL, but I gave up on FCE very quickly as it didn't support the best quality codec's I wanted to use after hacking my camera.
For practice I wouldn't fault it, but in the end the point of hacking the camera was to see better quality on screen, and the sequencer settings offered by FCE were less able than FC Studio.

Thanks Chrisso, for your reply. I did read your thread before posting, but things are significantly different in PAP as FCE gives you a 25p timeline. There (I think) you would have to pulldown because you are actually shooting in 25p but wrapped 50i.

I'm using 24p in a 60i wrapper. When I transfer it into Apple codec interface it is 27.97fps. I'm losing the 24p "splendor," but I seem to be getting clear and precise video without what you described in your original thread.

Am I correct in this?

Thanks again. I've been a professional photographer for a long time, but adjusting to video is a bit*h!

Take into account I'm neither a pro photographer or video maker, so you are already way ahead of me.
I wanted to work in pro-res 422 in Final Cut, and Express didn't offer me that option. Just Apple Intermediate Codec?
So I recently switched to FCS.
Mpeg just dropped straight in of course, but I've been filming in AVCHD for the most part.

No, I'm in the same boat as you when it comes to video: a newbie.

Were you using FCE version 4.0.1? I believe Apple has improved their intermediate codec in that version, and the AVCHD imports better.

The problem is that though it converts AVCHD gracefully, I am confined to work in a 27.97 timeline. But, the video is not robotic-like in any way.

You are certainly better off with FCS, but as I said I have to wait. I understand it's a big learning curve and it costs $1000. I was hoping to learn as much as I could in FCE, and several people mentioned that that practice could be applied when I got into FCS.

I was hoping to connect with someone that has used FCE 4.0.1 with NTSC (not PAL.)

Let me know what version FCE you were using, and how much time it took to adapt to FCS? Thanks for the help.
