GH1 Accesories List

Since there is a very high level of interest in this little gem called GH1, many newbies (including myself) are jumping into the semi pro field with this camera and do not have much idea of what accessories to get. It would be great if we can compile a list of recommended/suggested brand of accessories.

(Feel free to post suggestions and I'll update the list. Remember this list of for newbies/non-professionals who are not looking to spend twice the amount on accessories than the camera)

Here's what I'm using, not necessarily recommendations although I am happy w/everything so far.

SD Card
-Class 4 Sandisk Ultra II 4gb (x2)
Carrying Bag
-Ogio Atiba Mini Backpack
Tripod
-Davis and Stanford Tripod W/Ball leveler and FM18 "fluid" head. (I like the tripod and head but the fixed spreader sucks, might modify DIY.)
Stabilizer
-DIY Gunstock mount (http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/2683/img0025r.jpg)
(thinking of getting that new Indifocus DSLRsm shoulder mount)
Extra Battery
-Praying your battery doesn't run out.
External Mic
-Borrowing tiny audio recorders.
-When I get back to school sound guy with boom-mic (usually a cheaper [just or well under $400] sennheiser or røde.)
Filters
-Tiffen 0.9 screw-on ND, 62mm. Step up/down rings for various lenses.
Lenses
Nikon 50mm pre-AI f/1.4.
Sigma (nikon) 24mm f/1.8 Macro.

has anybody bought the cheap replacement batteries from eBay ? I've heard that the new firmware does not allow the use of non-panasonic batteries. Is that the case ? If so, the only option is to buy "overpriced" Panasonic battery ?

Any recommendations for a mic jack adapter? I have a Sennheiser MKE300 which has a standard 3.5mm jack. Is the tiny jack on the GH1 some kind of weird proprietary Panasonic thing?

what other camera bag is recommended ? (just to carry the camera, lens and charger). Also anybody bought an extra battery ?

There are so many photo bags out there. I suggest looking at Lowepro, Kata, Tamrac, Tenba and Domke photo bags.

I can confirm the 3rd party batteries won't work with GH1's latest firmware (1.1). One of them came with my ebay package. When you stick it into the camera it gives a warning and then shuts down. If you want spare batteries they have to be real Panasonic's.

Yeah they recommend cable adapters but find a stereo one that will also not have too much plastic on connector so that it can fit on GH1. I was trying to speak more generally about kind of adapter, not so much on specifics, those were first hits on google.

I'm sure there are many brands but I'm trying to find specific models that will work with GH1.

What do you guys think of this bag ? http://www.jr.com/lowepro/pe/LOW_SLING100/

I have this bag. If all you want is room for the GH1 w/kit lens and maybe one smaller lens, and a few other things, it's cool. Really like the "sling" feature. Well constructed with a built-in rain boot. Look it up on Amazon for the reviews. Be aware this bag is small which, depending on where you're going and what you need to carry, can be a nice advantage.

The Lowepro site has some good picts and vids about these bags too.

I used the rainhood on my Ogio Atiba Mini like the second day I had it...great feature...covers the whole bag!

It holds all my stuff...GH1, lenses, cards, chargers, laptop, cards, etc.

Can strap small tripods to the side if needed with included elastic thingies.

It also looks like a backpack so it's pretty inconsipcous. I really like the little semi-clear zipper pouches on inside of main pocket. Interchangeable partitions..great bag.

Since I know that I won't be buying any new lenses anytime soon, I'm mainly looking for a small bag (just big enough to carry GH1 Kit, charger and couple of extra batteries). I like the slink bag as well but the only thing that worries me is that I would be problem, if I'm carrying my laptop bag as well (during travel). If I get one that can accommodate laptop as well then I won't be able to use it on regular basis that's why I was leaning towards a shoulder bag, that I just can just put in my laptop bag.

Mate, bags are a very personal thing. Depending on your needs, and even on how you like to pack your gear (I for instance always attach a lens on the camera instead of separating them) means some bags will work better than others. Only you can tell.

http://www.cambags.com/ has a list of user reviews with photos. Generally if it can fit the Canon 500D or the Nikon D40/40x/60 and one lens it'll fit the GH1 kit. Look at the photos; they're quite handy in judging if the bag fits what your criteria.
