GH1: 8bit sensor vs 7D: 14bit sensor

Yes that page highlights(excuse the pun..) the problem pretty well. I do turn my camera contrast to minimal although I see roughly the same issue with all of the preset modes regardless.

I've been running sharpness at +2. I'll definitely try it at minimum.

I deal with A/D sampling at my day job since we design measurement equipment. We use 8 and 12 bit A/D converters and I see a similar concept here. You can either get fast, wide bandwidth measurements that aren't very accurate or you can have slow, narrow bandwidth measurements that are very accurate. Depending on the math and processing power available, you can have 8 bit conversion and subsequent DSP work that outputs better resolution than 12 bit converters although the raw data might inherently be more precise from the 12 bit converter for the same clocking rate.

I just see that a lot of these cameras have a wide bandwidth of contrast but not a lot of accuracy. As you mention with roll-off, it seems like going beyond a certain point, both negatively and positively seems to exponentially move towards white or black instead of tracking the true shade. Unfortunately when I see videos online and I see a highlight that obviously shouldn't be as blown out as it appears due to the darkness in the rest of the frame, that is just another one of those "VIDEO!" moments.

...and beats the GH1 which outputs nothing during record

Hi: new to the GH1. Considering a switch from a Canon HV30. I capture uncompressed 1080 via the HV30's HDMI.

So is there no way to enable the HDMI out in anything other than playback mode on the GH1?

Any hacks yet?

Thanks

No way yet. No hacks. Some other tweaks are being looked at right now. It's unlikely that the GH1 hardware is capable of uncompressed HDMI out. Don't get your hopes up. Be tremendously surprised (Along with me) if somebody figures it out, but don't hold your breath.

eye-fi!

eye-fi!

you may be able to view the file as its been written, but not confirmed yet as knowbody's tried it, plus it might be slightly behind real-time, but it s a possibility;-)

No, it is not possible, due to eye-fi construction and software. They have SD card and Wi-Fi controller + small CPU in parralel, and controller only works on high level (files). They even do not know how to work with AVCHD.
Still do not understand how some Chinese company did not throw them out of the market.
