GH1(3) for TV Broadcast... elephant in the room?

Hi guys,

I've been lurking around these parts for about a year now, and somehow never felt the initiative to post, but I've learned an awful lot from the insightful debates here, many thanks! What has prompted me to post is a question that was asked many times in relation to the Canon DSLRs subsequent to their release.

So... how does the footage produced by tester13's wonderfully modded GH1 potentially measure up to that rather slippery term of 'broadcast standard'?

Is the AVCHD codec still going to send broadcast engineers running miles? And what about 4:2:2 MJPEG then? Is the footage produced by this camera acceptable in terms of aliasing and any other relevant factors? And do you think we'll ever see GH13 footage on TV (in either HD or SD broadcast)?

We'll take it as a given that 'proper' broadcast/ENG/RED etc cams, not to mention the forthcoming AG AF100, will always be preferable when it comes to shooting for broadcast, but nevertheless DSLRs have already showcased their own particular strengths.

Your opinions?

I'm shooting a red carpet event on Tuesday in Atlanta.. I'll be using my hacked GH13 for interviews.. One of the interviews is the mom from the new Karate Kid movie... It's going to be broadcast, so we'll see.

I'll post clips if I'm allowed (will find out Tuesday).

How 'bout some bogstandard GH1 footage from last year? Passed QC for broadcast with flying colours and client very happy with it projected at 1080p at various corporate hubbubs. Done several jobs since without a hacked GH1 since.

I shot bluescreen in my back garden of a winter athlete and composited in AE. This was way before tester 13. Not the cleanest blue screen I have ever used but it worked fantastically. I shot with kit lens and a few Canon FD's for closeups. Broadcast quality is such a loose term nowadays and certain Broadcasters are very finicky about what they get. This was for channel Nine in Australia, the link below is a Youtube version so not tremendous quality. The particular shots are first goggle reflection shot, and the girl with the rifle.

Channel Nine Winter Olympics opener

I am very interested in the Hack as picture quality is something I have had to fight with in terms of grading etc.

Martti, where can I pick up one of those sweet outfits!!! On a serious note, that looked pretty good for non hacked gh1!-Adam

I shot a Weather promo for a TV station using a non-hacked GH1. It won a regional Emmy Award and nobody has ever questioned what it was shot on. If you have a strong concept, and the footage is well-lit and well composed, a GH1 is certainly broadcast quality...hacked or not.

wow. do you have this footage we can see?

I don't think there's any problem with using the GH1 (even pre hack) in SD broadcasts. I shot lots of stuff for a BBC history documentary last year. It was Standard Def so there wasn't an issue. I shot in 720 mode and downcoverted in post. I had to work within the limitations and keep an eye out for artefacts but that should be less of an issue on the GH13!

Shooting for HD broadcast is a different matter as the broadcasters are very picky. Worst case you should be able to use it but it might count as part of the non-HD quota. But would anyone be able to tell? Who knows?

Broadcast and beyond. There were plenty of people who had already seen the GH1 on 60Foot Screens and said it blew up fantastically. With the hack, it just gets better.

Broadcasting concerns should only be an issue when choosing format. If AVCHD origination is fine with the station, then the GH1 is more than enough for most situations.
