GH3 GH-3 in Panasonic Booth at NAB

So, every year for the last couple of years, I've gone to the Panasonic booth at NAB, and asked about the GH series cameras... with the 'oh that's in the another division'... well apparently this year they had a guy, a case with the GH-3 and attendant lenses stuck in a corner of the massive booth area that Panasonic occupies...

Don't know if it will be the same next year... but it may be an indicator that someone somewhere in Panasonic does monitor what people are doing... at least in the GH-x spectrum of cameras...

I suspect the Zacuto 'Revenge' Shootout probably was the biggest 'stick in the eye', since there was only the GH-2 in the camera set, and there were several Canons and Sonys, representing different classes of their respective lines...

That's interesting. Seeing that they don't have much going on this year at NAB I wonder what they have up their sleeve for next year for the GH series? As much as I like what I'm seeing from the GH-3 I don't think I'll upgrade from my GH-2 which might not be as sleek as the GH-3 but to me the final image dances between being almost as good to slightly better. I hope their next go around they do something completly unconventional....like maybe so many seconds of RAW capture or Picture Profiles or something.

Since the GH-x is in the 'consumer' camera division (or something like that...), I'd expect their premiere cycle is centered on shows like September Photokina show in Köln. But the next Photokina is in 2014... I bought the Wife here upgrade camera this year, so I won't be changing out my GH-1 any time soon... Although I have thought about getting one off of e-bay...

As for what they could do that would be 'revolutionary'... I think publishing an API for 'enhanced' feature programing, and legitimize hackerage... and a few improvements in color sampling and bit depth...

Panasonic had a micro 4/3 section which had 2 GH3 and an AF100A. Both were set to shoot a set side my side with different lens set ups on both. There was also a loose GH3 on a teather to a corner table. They people I talked to were very supportave of the image. The main GH was a in a cage mounted up, with a very nice Panasonic monitor, cool rig.

I saw a very nice cage from D-Focus today. The vendor was in the Samy's Camera booth in Center Hall.

GH3 is inside and out a better camera than the GH2. 1080 60fps is worth the price of admission alone..... Many many people are never looking back. Also since it's release the reviews are very very good and the camera is selling out everywhere. I am looking at buying a Black Magic pocket cam for some cool high dynamic range shooting.

I can't agree. In three blind comparisons so far, I chose the GH2 as the better image. GH3's 'superiority' seems largely focused on features (some of which are nice but none of which are 'must haves' for me personally), with only marginal and sometimes questionable improvements in image quality.

GH3 has more DR
GH3 has cleaner high ISO
1080p 60

Those are the main non feature but pure image related upgrades for the GH3 over GH2. These image related improvements combined with all of the feature improvemenst (too many to list) made the $600 cost of upgrade well worth it to me. If these things aren't important than of course you wouldn't upgrade. The rest is personal preference of an image. I like the GH3's color much more than GH2 but that is preference and I like to take pictures with my GH3 also so that was important to me.

GH3's improved DR is a considerable improvement as well.

The ergonomics and features aren't a little better than the GH2, they are way better, from custom buttons to weather sealing, from handleability to OLED monitor to audio monitoring.
Combined with great 1080 60p and better DR, It's simply a more complete shooting system than the GH2 - which has an awesome image at any price.

All of the night/dark footage I've shot with the GH3 beats the GH2, hands-down. I'm not sure what blind comparisons you have done, but I've yet to see anything where the GH2 wins out. When you add in the ability to shoot at a high bit-rate without risking a hack's instability and at 60P, that's anything but a "marginal" improvement. Especially if you plan on using the camera for any sort of paid work.
