Hi guys,

I did a first take for a new sketch show I'm filming, with the GH-1 yesterday.. and not too pleased with the quality of footage..

I'm wondering if any of u fantastic people can offer me any small snippets of advice to improve this footage either in post or during filming next time?

Here it is:

Thanks guys,

hmm... anyone?

It just seems to me the white balance is way off and the actual resolution quality seems low in terms of detail, even on the original footage. Filmed in 1080 25p.

I guess I'll just have to keep practising...

Most was shot on smooth film mode with -2 saturation, -2 contrast, 0 sharpness, 0 noise reduction.

Most of the shots were set to AWB

Some were manual, some shutter priority, some iA, some program P.

No colour correction.

Used Vegas Pro 9 to render, with settings: 32bit floating point. 1080 50i wmv.

Next time white balance definitely and shoot everything on manual, so you can lock your shutter at 1/50. Just doing these will improve your image quality immensely. Get a better steady cam solution as well, what were you using now?

I'm realizing more and more just how important a great steady cam or renting a dolly is. I'm guilty of this as I have been using a free steady cam (holding folded tripod up at balance point) for some work and the shakes have been there. Those shakes call too much attention to themselves and takes the viewer out of focusing on what is going on. I pretty much have no idea what was going on in your video because of this.

This will vary of course since I am a film person and see this stuff right away.

Thanks for the tips man...

Steadicam was a B-hague steadimotion or something like that.. what would u recommend?

I tried setting the shutter to 1/50 but didn't like the effect. Will try it again next time and see what the results are like. :)

I have found the using manual settings is useful for tripod shots, but not for a steadicam shot as it causes the image to under or over expose as you move the camera. Are u sure this is the way to go with a steadicam?

Thanks! :)

Hmm not sure what is the best steadicam for the GH1... I think there are some threads on it. I don't have the $$$ to get a nice premade one so I don't even bother looking lol.

Ah yes, the image will under/over expose if you are constantly moving from different lighting to different lighting, but having the GH1 auto change your exposure is a bad idea. Higher F-stops = cheaper looking video (in most cases) and shutter speed changes also negatively affects the image. The way to handle different lighting with the GH1 is to use ISO and ND filters... for a steadicam constantly moving around you could get a variable ND that you can change by rotating and manually adjust exposure with the ND by hand as you move around. Tough but doable.

cheers for the advice.. I wish it was possible to set ISO to [auto] when using a fixed F stop and shutter speed.. this would solve the issue to a certain degree. It's odd that panny missed it off, as there is an [AUTO] ISO setting for the P mode.
