GH2 getting to gh2 late - where do i start my education?

coming from an eng rig, i am getting to the dslr revolution late.

i am drawn to the gh2 because:

i need long record times and the canon 10-12min limit is a deal breaker.

i very much like panasonic products and really like the "pannie look".

i shoot lots of talking head interviews for web clients.

i shoot lots of short corporate pieces.

but being late to the game, there is an overwhelming amount of info out there.

where do i start my education?

i have walked thru pages and pages of this forum along with watching hours of vimeo footage.

and i am more and more excited about the possibilities.

possible topics:

lens choices.
audio set-up.
dressing up the gh2.

i like forward to thoughts, links, pointers which anyone cares to share.

be well

Well, if you don't have a GH2 yet - get one. Learning with the camera in your hand makes the process go better. I researched the GH1 and 2 for a long time before I owned either, but having the hands-on experience was so much more beneficial to my learning curve. I learned in the same way you are: watching plenty of videos shot with GH2's and reading user blogs, mainly this very one we're on. You're on the right track - just keep watching, reading, and doing your own tests. The topics you've mentioned have all been covered in great detail. The Advanced Search is a great tool for finding pertinent threads.

Reading the manual is a must for this camera. Take the time to acquaint yourself with all the features and the semi-complex menus. Since you already have a background in videography, you'll probably get comfortable with the GH2 in no time at all.

EOSHD just came out with a guide to shooting video with the GH2. I haven't read it personally, but it's supposed to be more useful than the manual.

This site has taught me a lot as well. I usually search it via Google.

I bought the EOSHD book (eoshd.com). It's a very good intro to the camera for video work: covers important menu settings, lens, audio, hacking the GH2 and more. It's a bit expensive ($29 for PDF), though.

eoshd looks to be a very interesting website forum.

i do plan on perhaps picking up a gh2 but waiting till after the nov 3rd announcements just to be sure.

preferred way to treat audio?

what is preferred external recorder?

any one-man/person bands who shoot with gh2?

if so, how rigged out is your gh2? where/how do you operate the audio?

sorry for the newb questions.

i've got plenty to learn and each new tidbit of info just leads to more newb type questions.

i'm psyched about the camera.

thanks in advance.

be well

I either record direct to the camera using Sennheiser UHF mics ( lav or handheld ) which sounds quite good.

Here's a quick interview I shot with the mic fed directly to my Panasonic GH-2: Micheal Vonn talks about E-Health, HIV and Privacy

...Or, I use a Sound Devices MixPre mixer, which is fed directly to the GH-2 using a BeachTek DXA-2s passive XLR adapter, and also recorded to an Olympus LS-11 digital recorder. This set-up also works great, and provides me with duplicate audio tracks. ( recorded by the GH-2 and the Olympus LS-11 )

At some point I plan on buying a Sony M-10 digital recorder to replace the Olympus LS-11, as the Sony has a very low noise-floor. ( about 20 dB quieter than the Olympus )

thedingo-

thanks for the link.

in metro nyc i try like the plague to avoid going wireless.

i also have a mixpre and like the idea of linking it to a beachtek dxa-2s.

i imagine the beachtek disables the gh2's agc?

does the gh2 has the ability to record two unique tracks of audio - a lav on channel 1 and a boom on channel 2?

thanks in advance.

be well
