Getting the SD look through an HVX

So I'm doing a shoot this weekend and we are trying to have this "hand held, cheap crappy handy-cam" kind of look for a segment. We are shooting with my HVX.

So my question is how do I go about dumbing down the image? do I shoot at 480 or lower? or can this be achieved in post? Also ideally I'd want the footage to be in 4x3 instead of 16x9. Is there a setting i can do on the camera, or should I just mask the footage and dumb it down with filters and effects?

basically its a scene where an American journalist is held captive by terrorists in Iraq. and this is shot by the terrorists' late 90's VHS camcorder kind of look, if that might help you visualize...

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions and input. thanks!!

In my opinion always always ALWAYS get the best quality footage you can on set/in camera as you can and change it as needed in post. You may change your mind about the style or find that you didn't need to crap up the footage. This way you keep all of your options open, just in case.

in post tweak your curves the wrong way, opposite of a "S" direction. it'll look crap!

enjoy

Question

Hi I shot something 576/50i and chose DV in '576i Rec Mode' the footage looks ****. I shot mini DV (on tape) with the HVX and it looked a lot better. Is 576/50i not the format that is used for miniDV tapes? Or should I have used 'DVCPRO'.

I shot on DV coz the people i shot this for did not want it in HD, but the footage turned out really pixilated. Can anyone tell me why?

thanks

Do NOT shoot HVX at 480i, there is a known bug that causes horrific aliasing. Shoot it at 30p if you shoot 480 to tape.

ash =o)
