Getting the proper exposure

I want to be able to get the proper exposure for all of my shots using just the HVX until I get more scratch together and can get an good incident meter.

Does anyone have any detailed methods for getting the proper exposure every time with just the HVX?

Also, any suggestions on reliable cheap inc. meters?

Define proper exposure. For what?

Use the Marker function, get an IRE readout. You can also customize the Zebras so that one kicks in at 70% for skintones, for example.

Yeah, I'd say definitely try to use the zebras (for instance one set at 80% and one set at 105%) to define a set zone for your exposure to fall into.

If you want to do it the technical way, get a monitor with waveformer. Attach the camera to it and watch the waveformer. A value of 53% - 55% is usually recognized as "Normal Exposure". Faces /skin tones should never go under 30% or above 70% (thats at least how I do it, maybe somebody else has different values here?!).

If combined with a spotmeter and a 18% neutral grey card you can even get the ASA/ISO equivalent of your camera, by using the waveformer. A reading of 18% Grey equals to 53% on the waveformer. Thats what you call "Normal Exposure"

Have a look at David Tames's (cinemakinoeye) description:

get a 18% grey card, point it half way between the key and the camera. Turn the marker on the camera on and point it at the grey card. When it hits 50 IRE you should be properly exposed.
