Getting the best slow motion(or ramp) with 25P?

What is the best way to get a smooth slow motion out of 25P?
In Avid Xpress Pro you can do some ramping, but with 25P it looks like crap.

(And ooh ya, today I have shot with F1 scene file with Squeezed 16:9, it look like crap either).

Have you tried any of the Fluidmotion slomo and ramps? Or try the motion effects within the Boris effects which uses a similar technology for creating new frames based on vector movements of each pixel - sort of autmated digital "tweening."

Is F1 on a PAL version of the camera interlace or progressive? Make sure when using squeeze you use the the THIN settings for more detail.

By Fluidmotion, do you mean the TimeWarp effects, in the effect pallet? And is Boris Effects a plug-in for Avid or stand alone?

The F1 mode on the PAL dvx is interlaced(so are F2, F3, F4), and they are all set on thin by default. Only F5 scene file is set on thick.
But the effect in squeezed mode with F1 scene file, thus interlaced, is that diagonal lines look jagged and fussy, it's really ugly. When shooting progressive, there is no such effect. This weekend I have shot a big party, and I am glad that I filmed with progressive mode on the day of the event itself. The picture looks more solid too.

Yes, Timewarp Effetcs in the palette use the FluidMotion engine. I keep forgetting those marketing names... ;)

Boris FX also ships with the product, so you should look into that as well. Twixtor is also a plug-in you can purchase as an AVX to do the same.

I use timewarp, but it still seems to strobe...

There will be some strobing since motion can only be updated once every 1/25th of second. Timewarp uses the FluidMotion engine which creates new frames based on pixel movement. The more movement samples you have oer second, the more data it has to work with and create a smoother slow motion. In your case, you are working with 1/25th on the source instead of the normal 1/50th (albeit at 1/2 the vertical resolution). And you are rendering back to a 1/25th of a second which will have some strobing as part of its natural beat/second.

But did the action actually slow down? If you can plan ahead, you might want to try shooting footage intended for slomo as 25i and process in a 25i project. Once completed, you can render an interlace to progressive (coming as a preset in v.4.5) and then export those frames back into a 25p project to see of there is an improvement in quality.

Ya, that was I also thinking, shooting those shots in 25i and then blend it in with the 25P material.

What do you mean by: But did the action actually slow down?

And in v 4.5, can you render something in a 25i project to progressive when making slow motion? Sounds nice.

I was thinking (bit haven't tried it) is to shoot something as 25i so you have more motion for the render process to use as part of the slomo - once the desired speed has been achieved, render out a progressive version using the interlace to progressive preset filter. Then bring that into your 25p project, or just stay in a 25i if that is what you are working in.

But there is some problem I mentioned before, if I shoot squeezed interlace, the picture looks a little jaggy, so the quality will not be the same when those are mixed...

But did you deinterlace with a vector based program that creates full progresive frames? I an suggesting this once you get v.4.5 that has that preset as part of the Timewarp effects set.
