Getting the best image for post out of the D7000.

I figured I would start this thread to see what people are shooting at (Picture Profile wise) and what they are doing to get a fairly neutral image. I feel like the image out of the camera is way too contrasty in the blacks. So to me Im gonna start by lowering that and maybe the saturation.

I haven't done any real testing yet, but my instinct was to create a profile with the contrast turned down all the way down. I do that, and sharpening all the way down, too (though as I said in another thread, I think it could use a notch or two). An since there appears to be no headroom in the quicktimes, I have the brightness down as well (though I don't know yet what this does). Hue and saturation in the middle.

I've tested shooting with the lens cap on in this mode and I do get pure 0,0,0 black. And blowing out the image yields 255,255,255. So the camera is using the full range available in the file, even with contrast down.

I am also inclined to underexpose the camera by at least a stop, to preserve some of the highlights. There seems to be plenty in the shadows with these settings.
