Getting that 70's documentary look.

I'm going to be doing a parody of those poorly made 16mm documentaries and health films that all seem to have been produced in the 70's. I was wondering if anybody had any ideas for how to be convincing as far as color/contrast, etc. and camera angles are concerned. I have Magic Bullet 2 Editors, but I don't have a recent enough version of Premiere to run it. I only have Premiere 6 and whatever filters came with it, so I'd love to know if you have any ideas given what resources I have.

Ahh... the 70's.

1970's = Underlit and overexposed. (re. Columbo)

versus

1990 thru 2000's = Overlit and underexposed. (re. X-Files)

If you have MB try the EPIC preset as a start...gives it the tri-color flatness that looks just 'off' enough to be visually 'on'. Please excuse the Jibber jabber.

ahhh the 70s documentary look.... funny you mention that

I just finished up the final edits on my mockumentary and one of the interview scenes (shot on a balcony at the "magic hour") has a full on 70s/8mm/documentary look to it...

in FCP... 3 way color corrected to a slightly warmer tone, de-saturated a bit, kicked up the highlights a tad, crushed the blacks a tad, and put a gaussian blur over the footage (set at the default of 2)..... turned out GREAT! if you've seen boogie nights and are familiar with that spoofy documentary that was being done on dirk by julia meadows(?? I'm bad with names).... anywho.... the scene looks alot like those shots of dirk walking around in some random LA location, setting sun, very cheesy, very BADASS!! haha
