getting rid of gain noise?

i accidentally had my gain up a little during an interview, it was really well lit so there is really not much noise, but on the subjects jacket is a litle fuzzy. this project is for a DP who has an eye for that kind of stuff. Is there any way of erasing thiss little mistake with a lil color correcting or something.??
Any help would be nice.
Thanx
Steve

Re: getting rid of gain noise?

Unfortunatly, there isn't a whole lot you can do. you can experiment with different smoothing filters, but you will be losing detail at the same time. Basically, what you have done is underexposed your footage, depending on what gain setting you had. So to get rid of it completely you could adjust the gain levels on your color corrector and basically negate the gain that you applied. You would end up with no noise, but very poorly lit footage, so it is a trade off. Becasue you shot with gain, it means that you adjust your shutter speed and aperature to compensate, thus underexposing your normal footage and then digitally boosting the colors within the camera. You might post a frame grab so we can see just how bad it is.

Do you have AE Production Bundle? I've used the grain filter on noisy/grainy stock footage with amazing results.

There's also some sort of VirtualDub filter that people talk about, like GrainKiller or something (boy, this is a helpful post, isn't it?) Search for "noise" and VirtualDub and you will probably find it.

or use a color blur of some sort over the color of the jacket and see if it does the trick...

Re: getting rid of gain noise?

thanks for the input.
ive decided to turn a blind eye as it was not really that bad. i can see the noise because i shot it and have spent time editing it, but none of my colligues seemed to think that it was at all problimatic so i wont worry about it.
Thanx
Steve
