Getting paid for gear in freebie shoots

Ok so I don't have a long history in this business, but having been a business owner for over 20 years, I feel qualified to tell a little story.

For many years I owned a machine shop where we did a lot of one off stuff in stainless and aluminum. . Inventors would come in with a prototype idea and just like a tape recording, they would say "if you can give me a great deal on the prototype, you get rich when we produce thousands (millions)". In response, I would say "tell you what, let's do this, you pay full price for the prototype, and I give you a great deal when we build thousands (millions)".

In business, people like to avoid risk. I have often mortgaged everything I own for my businesses and sometimes lost the bet. If a film producer won't take any risk, such as investing $ himself, or finding investors for a project, then they are shifting the risk to the free help. Work for free and you'll get lots of credit or money IF it is successful. Of course they never say how a failed project might have a negative effect on your career. Either way, you are assuming risk; financial or professional.

As a newbie in this business, one of the ways I have been able to get work is to assume some of the risk that a customer would normally assume. This works as long as I am successful.

I believe in charity for those in need. Working on a for profit venture for free is just silly.

Best Regards,
Grant
