getting files off a DVD

I have to send a sample of my documentary work to a producer. I only have copies of my most recent work on DVD. And I don't know how to get clips off the DVD, so I can edit together my stuff (apart from the otehr stuff other guys did on the DVD). The DVD contains an Audio folder and a Video folder.

Anyone know how to import from a DVD?

Easiest way is to run a DVD player into your camera or deck and let Avid capture it through Firewire. You'll need to click the Toggle Source button in the Capture Tool though.

If that's not feasible there's a software way to do it, but it's not pretty and will take a significantly larger amount of time.

In my first post I detail the nightmare it was to basically get it right...

But basically, open the DVD, copy and paste the .VOB files from the Video_TS folder into your hard drive -- if you're posting here, I assume you're using AVID, so use either Sorenson Squeeze or Quicktime Pro to convert the .VOBs to Quicktime files (for highest quality: Avid DV video codec - Apple Motion JPEG B - interlaced, bottom field first, 2-pass VBR -- audio: 16-bit Little Indian, Big Indian or if you have the option AC3 uncompressed) -- once transcoding is done import the .mov files into the timeline and voila!

When you're done editing, save project as QUICKTIME REFERENCE for highest quality and uncompress back to MPEG-2 format and author that DVD away...
