getting daylight streaks on a wall

To break up flatly lit walls in the background of shots, I plan to project streaks of light on them that would be coming from a nearby window. The one method I have seen is cutting out cookies and placing them a little in front of a light using a c-stand. I guess you would put some CTB on it if you wanted to balance it to daylight?

Anyway, is this the best method? Are there other methods?

What kind of light works best for this? Would a 1K fresnel shot through cookies and CTB work or is there a better (and hopefully affordable) solution?

That would work. I sometimes use a leko with window pattern gobos. If you have this light available to you it is a great alternative. There are many window patterns available and they are surprisingly inexpensive.

The gobos/cookies are readily available. A PAR 64 can, with a 1K focused beam bulb might be a good inexpensive alternative to a Leko. They are available from theatre/DJ supply sites on eBay very cheap.

This joint has them pretty cheap:

You would need to pick up a baby female adaptor to bolt on the yoke and use them on stands. You can get that at:

An Arri 650 fresnel works well unless the room is very bright. In a pinch, I've had good results by just poking random holes in foil which is clipped to the barn doors. It's not a window effect (which seldom looks believable anyway) but gives the background some nice variation as if light is being filtered thru a plant in the window. And drop the blue for golden sunshine.
