getting "Beams of light" through windows etc...

Recently got my DVX100b, and have been playing with it's different settings in various lighting locations and such, I'm very happy with what I've been able to achieve with it (rather, what it achieves for me for the most part)
But, I can't seem to get one look I'm a big fan of...

the look (used often in spielberg films, esp.munich) where you can see beams of light blastig through windows and such.

What would I need to do to achieve something like that? I've tried putting 500w lights outside windows in all hours of the day, and can't see the "beams".

is it a filter? or shutter/ND combo? iris? what?

thanks

You need to get some fog in the room. You can buy canned fog, or use a cheap Halloween fog machine to add some haze to the room. The beams will show themselves.

in order to see beams of light through windows there has to be some kind of substance for the light to bounce off of, ie dust, smoke etc. Putting the light outside the window is a good start but you need to have some kind a smoke or hazer machine inside so that the particles will reflect the light. So it really has nothing to do with the camera, if you can see it with your eye, most likely the camera will be able to see it. If you can't see beams of light with your eyes, then your camera can't see it either.
