Getting around a burnt firewire input

Okay, so now I can't capture directly from the Dvx100a. But I have a Sony digital 8 camera. Do I record the footage onto a D8mm tape, then capture from that? Or can I run the footage through the camera...kind of hook both of the cameras together, then connect the Sony to my Hd by firewire and capture that way?

And won't the digital 8 format degrade the Dvx footage ?

Sorry guys, I know this has been touched on, but I'm still kind of wrestling around with this camera. I'm ordering Barry's book, not so coincidentally.

Thanks in advance

Is the firewire input burnt on your camera or your computer? If it's on the camera then you'll have to go out to the Digital8 camera with composite (RCA plugs) or S-VHS and yes that will degrade your signal.

Digital8 is bit-for-bit identical with DV.

But that's not your problem. If your firewire port is dead, you have no way to transfer to Digital8, anyway.

Or, you could transfer it using analog, but that WOULD degrade your quality, and forget transferring pulldown information or metadata. In most cases, forget editing in 24p.

You can, however, use pretty much any Mini-DV camcorder for capture straight from your tape.

Any idea on the cost to fix this? Would it be cheaper than buying another mini-dv camera?

You have to factor in, though -- what will you be wanting to do with your camera? Are you ever going to want to record live to a hard drive or laptop with it, for example? If so, you'll need the port.

Food for thought.

Very upset...

Very upset...

I just got a call back from the Panasonic service centre and they are telling me it will be $1300 (CAD) to replace the firewire port. Something has got to be wrong with that....

Anyone?
