Getting an AG-DVX100a...am I too young?

Re: Getting an AG-DVX100a...am I too young?

That salesman didn't have a clue. Fifteen is a perfectly reasonable age for the DVX100. By the time I was 14, I had a Bolex and a Nikon F and processed my own E-6. My 8-year old daughter has been shooting with her Sony digital for a year now. I was just in the Apple store tonight and found out they'll be offering summer workshops in digital moviemaking for kids--sorry you're too old, but it's for kids 8-12. :-)

Find a store with better salespeople and buy the damn DVX.

Re: Getting an AG-DVX100a...am I too young?

IMHO SOME salesman are outright tools... a lil story for the archives :

Before I went to Hong Kong for a nice hoilday and to purchase my DVX, I was thinking of purchasing the DVX duty-free ..... in Australia.

I got in contact with a company who deal with the mighty DVX in Aus for duty-free and retail purposes, (you cant buy the DVX in just any old camera house over here - ask 95% of the shops over here if they sell the DVX and you get a confused glare) anyways back to the point ..

This salesman found much delight in telling me the $6500 Aus price tag and how they are one of few that stock this machine... he asked why I would be using it (several times over our 25 min conversation) and finally that I should think VERY VERY hard before purchasing the DVX and that maybee I was too YOUNG to be purchasing the DVX... Im 23 btw... to look at something cheaper. I gave the salesman my email address and asked if he could send me a brochure on their products even... I never recieved shiz. To be honest I dont think he took me serious from the time I walked in (whether it be looks or attitude)

I now have a DVX which I purchased in HK and can honestly say it was the most mature purchase I have ever made. I worked and saved hard for my DVX and middle finger up to any salesman high on his horse who thinks he can dictate which customer deserves such product.

;)

Dude buy the DVX...thats all that needs to be said...get some freelance work and buy more equipment..that is all I do now...:) Work then buy...so on and so forth..its a great system... !!!

Re: Getting an AG-DVX100a...am I too young?

Go for it man. I was 17 when I bought mine. When I went to a local store here in Atlanta I found that I was in a similar situation. The salespeople all wanted to help the older clients first as I didn't look like I had that much money. They didn't even want to let me hold the thing. The guy that was showing me the camera stood about 6" from me the whole time I had it in my hand. Finally I decided to give up on them and go with a much less expensive online alternative. I purchased from Profeel. I had a great experinece with them, and have had an even better experince with the camera.

I also agree with Barry however. If don't plan on putting some money aside for a nice mic (I love my AT897 btw), lights, etc you will have a very hard time putting together a quality production, even with such a nice camera.

In any case, good luck.

Re: Getting an AG-DVX100a...am I too young?

Which microphone would you guys recommend? Are there any other supplies that are recommended? And finally should I get the DVX100 or DVX100a? Thanks again...

Re: Getting an AG-DVX100a...am I too young?

You probably won't find a 100, that's not a used product...they discontinued it in January I believe, right when the A came out...so you'll probably only be *able* to get the A.

I've never used it, but everyone says that the ME-66 is the best mic to get...its about $200-300 I think

Re: Getting an AG-DVX100a...am I too young?

The store I went to still carries the 100 (I don't know if it's used or not though)...

Re: Getting an AG-DVX100a...am I too young?

if the price difference is more than 600$, that will get you a nice mic (audio technica or a me66) + a tripod. i would definatly go for the 100

Re: Getting an AG-DVX100a...am I too young?

ME66/K6 from Rush @ evsonline.com woohoo mine kicks ass!

Re: Getting an AG-DVX100a...am I too young?

FCP all the way!!!! There is a reason more and more hollywood features are edited on it!

Re: Getting an AG-DVX100a...am I too young?

..FCP is fine.. but it doesnt do anything that any of the others cant do.. this whole discussion comes up over and over.. the only reason they use FCP is because of product placement. and branding.. basically cause they are told its the thing to use, and the Mac is the only way to go.. in reality.. its doesnt have anything over the others at all.. and its a more expensive setup. they all do the job and do it well and offer the same features.

Re: Getting an AG-DVX100a...am I too young?

Yeah. Macheads have been predicting the PC's demise in Hollywood for 20 years, and the Macs still have their 10% of the market share. Don't buy into the aggressive marketing.

I've got nothing against Macs, though I think they're far too expensive and inflexible for what you get. They're good machines. But any time you see a movie where, say, a large office is all using Macs . . . don't believe it. It's all product placement. I've been in an out of more offices than snowflakes in Minneapolis in January, and I've seen maybe two Macs in any of them.

FCP is a fine, fine piece of software. If you try and love it, then great. You found your NLE. But you can get as good for less. Shop around.

Re: Getting an AG-DVX100a...am I too young?

FWIW... Since I use a Mac I guess you would label me a "MacHead", I use a Mac 'cause back when I first started using computers, all the cool software like Photoshop, Illustrator, Freehand, Painter, Quark, etc. were *only* available on the Mac platform.

Also, the Mac had a much more elegant interface than did MS-DOS... hello?!

Today, of course, there are versions of graphics-related (and video editing) software available for both Mac and PC/Windows

I've never been a Mac user who feels the need to thump my chest about my platform.

However, it seems most PC users are constatly bashing Apple and their market share, etc. wanting to pretend its use is only a fad or, at least, grossly exaggerated.

Actually, I've heard *way more* predictions of demise for the Mac by PC users than vice-versa.

Seacrest, out! ::) (rolling eyes at self...)

Re: Getting an AG-DVX100a...am I too young?

Good points, Terry -- but a "Machead" *is* the chest-thumping type, the Mac cultist. You aren't in that fraternity.

Though I would point out that PC users' predicitions of the demise of Apple have nearly come true a few times, and most recently it was only a cash infusion by Microsoft which saved them.

Which has nothing to do with the quality of the machines, of course. :)

Re: Getting an AG-DVX100a...am I too young?

To be honest... I have an old 400MHz Celeron w/Windows 95 on it that needs repair. I've thought about buying a newer PC so I could have a Mac and a PC NLE station.

With that in mind, what would you suggest as a dependable, capable, but not too pricey PC? Which flavor of Windows? Vegas or Premiere Pro?
I've used Premiere up to version 4 on the Mac.

Re: Getting an AG-DVX100a...am I too young?

Its not just the Mac it is the way it works...OS X runs on unix; a very very very stable base for the operating system. PCs run on DOS making it susceptible to all sorts of junk.

There is a real reason why post houses are using FCP. It is because the base platform is so stable. When you are working on a project worth loads of money, what happens when you accidently grab a virus on your PC...Your computer doesn't start up - you lose your data - your drive is corrupted..I know you may have never had these problems but tons of PCs users do and it is very possible for you to come across them too. You have just been lucky..seriously..

I have gone thourgh several systems the past couple years. Currently, I love PCs and I have 3 of them - I also love Macs and I have 4. I have used both my entire life and I have never had a single problem with my Macs ever! Now my PCs on the other hand have had many problems similar to the ones I mentioned above. Sometimes I have had no problems and they work perfectly fine.

Now for me, this may be just me but I like to know that I will never have a problem, you know? Using a Mac gives me that peace of mind. My work is safe..I make my money..I play a game or two on my PC.. It just seems that life is a little easier when doing this sort of video stuff on a Mac.

Re: Getting an AG-DVX100a...am I too young?

"PCs run on DOS making it susceptible to all sorts of junk"

Uh, not any more. Win ME (worse OS ever) was the last to use a DOS base. However, DOS was a very, very, very, very (as you like to say ;) stable operating system. Nothing wrong with it. Still used in all kinds of embedded apps today that are rock solid.

And just for the record, I usually only reboot my machine once a month and it runs 24/7. And I do it usually just to be safe. At work, once every 3 months I reboot and I'm a software developer and hammer my machines real hard. Most people's problems come from faulty hardware, faulty drivers, faulty applications they install, or them doing things they shouldn't be doing, not the OS.

Oh, and one last thing. If the MAC OS (or linux, etc.) were the predominant OS, it would have just as many virus problems as PCs now have. Some of the problems early on did stem from Microsoft's lack security and OS coding deficiencies, but today I wouldn't doubt if Microsoft's is now actually the most secure OS because for the last 10 years 95% of the worlds hackers have been trying to break it.
