Getting an AG-DVX100a...am I too young?

I finished my script recently and am ready to start. I've had two cameras before (One broke and I'm ready to sell the other one). My mom is selling her house and is putting $3,000 aside for me to buy a camera. I was thinking of either the Canon XL1-S or the Panasonic AG-DVX100a. Am I too young? Would this be a mistake? If I'm not too young which one would all of you recommend?

Uhhh, how old are you? Doesn't matter really, get the DVX and treat it kindly; your mother thinks your old enough to have a $3000 camera. And, by the way, your mom is cool.

Re: Getting an AG-DVX100a...am I too young?

..yeah that is weird, but to me it says that your pretty smart. most young people think they know everything, and can do anything, and have heads bigger than the rooms they stand in... so in that light id say no.. your not too young. you just need to really devote yourself to learning the art of filmmaking like anyone else at any other age, and im sure youll be fine.

Re: Getting an AG-DVX100a...am I too young?

The real question is are you tall enough for the DVX? For you see, my dear slasher, the DVX community is populated by giants.

Why... Jarred Land, himself, is said to be near seven feet tall.
;D ;D ;D

If mom thinks you're "mature" enough, then you are "old" enough, grasshopper!

Getting the XL1s would be the mistake ;)

Re: Getting an AG-DVX100a...am I too young?

Unless you were born yesterday, I'd say you're already too old to get an XL-1s :-). Seriously, I believe in buying quality if you can--regardless of your age. What a great mom you've got--I hope you realize that. Now the bigger question is, how much money is she setting aside for the tripod, lights and mics? The DVX100 is a great cam, but if you're shooting on a rickety $25 tripod, using the on camera mic for all your sound, and not worrying about lighting--then the DVX is not going to do you much good.

Your post is brief, so I don't know your situation, but you need to put together a package for shooting your flicks. It doesn't have to be elaborate--just check around on the forum to see how everyone is working on low cost solutions for equipment. If you have a total budget of $3000, you may want to consider buying a less expensive cam so you can put the whole kit together within budget. I'm assuming you're serious about doing some good work--otherwise, why would you be asking about the DVX100? I would initially factor in an extra $1000 for accessories if you want to realize the potential of the camera as opposed to treating it like a 1-chip handycam. Good luck with your quest.

Re: Getting an AG-DVX100a...am I too young?

Barry_S is right. You'll still need all of the equipment like lights, a good microphone (with boom pole) and such, if you want to make a good-looking movie. But assuming you have all that stuff, or are prepared to have that stuff...and it's down to a DVX or an XL1, DEFINITELY get a DVX.

Re: Getting an AG-DVX100a...am I too young?

Sorry I was so brief (But thanks for the replies).  I'm fifteen and the reason I asked this question is because yesterday we went to the store to buy the camera and when we got there the guy told me and my mom that I should probablly purchase a way less expensive camera because "at that age it'd be a waste of money."  My mom said it was my decision (I decided to hold out and not buy it that day just because of what the old hack said) and if I wanted it she'd buy it.  $3,000 is the most she's willing to spend on a camera (My budget for the movie will probablly come partially from the child support my dad has to pay) right now.  I already have a tripod (It was about $75-80). So that's the situation...I'm guessing then that I should go with the DVX huh?

What the heck does that mean, "it'd be a waste of money"? What a tool THAT guy was. Pay no attention.

Re: Getting an AG-DVX100a...am I too young?

If you think you can use a DVX, and it won't be a waste, then it won't be a waste. If you've got the resources, why not use them?

Re: Getting an AG-DVX100a...am I too young?

Man! To have had a DVX when I was 15. What can I say? 8)

Re: Getting an AG-DVX100a...am I too young?

im 16 and this june i will hopefully be getting a dvx100 (not an a, my parents arn't as cool as yours :) ) but don't listen to that "you're too young" bullshit. Stanley Kubrick once said "Perhaps it sounds ridiculous, but the best thing that young filmmakers should do is to get hold of a camera and some film and make a movie of any kind at all. "
i havnt spent a penny and got a 6.50 job and sold my xbox, my ipod and my speakers to buy a dvx100. I tried donations through my site ) but that didn't work out.
if you were willing to do great work and make it worthwhile, buy the dvx100. be sure to learn everything, i mean everything about it first. (FCP/Adobe solutions for 24p, camera movement etc)

Re: Getting an AG-DVX100a...am I too young?

sorry, forgot ;)
be sure to not worry about the budget for editing solutions... theres always another way... a better way.

Re: Getting an AG-DVX100a...am I too young?

Tru dat! :P

Vegas is reportedly very easy to learn to pick up, if you're new to NLEs. And it does 24PA support...you should definitely consider it...

Man I gotta get some money together to get myself a copy...I'm still using Premiere 6.5...

I love Vegas...go there every chance I get. Ahhh the Luxor. But rather than blow your money in Vegas, spend it on FCP4. :P
