GH5 Getting Accurate Color Saturation

Hi,

I make art videos on youtube and I'm always struggling to make the art show up correctly in video. With a video color checker chart you can address issues with white balance and color shift, but nothing tells me how much I need to saturate/desaturate my image to get it close to reality. There are little squares on a vector scope and my understanding was that the saturated chips on the video color checker chart were supposed to land in those squares, but if you correct like that your image is way too saturated.

Is there a "measurable" way to get accurate saturation beyond a reasonable doubt with the GH5/GH4?

Someone can (and will) correct me if I'm wrong, but those "boxes" on the Color Checker are used to give color reference. But when you pull up a shot of the chart in your color-correction environment and look at the vectorscope, the “boxes” you see on the scope aren't where normal saturation levels are supposed to land. They represent the maximum color-safe levels for each color in REC.709 color space. If your colors exceed those levels, they will not be broadcast compliant.

What you want to do is use those boxes to guide your corrections, so that each dot/line is lined up with the corresponding color box. But you DON'T want them landing in the boxes. That would mean your image is way oversaturated. Take a look at this…

I find saturation to be a very subjective thing. Depending on the project you might want more or less. Just go with what looks "good" to your eye.

Yes, you are wrong.

For instance, in DaVinci Resolve you could use a feature to automatically adjust the colors based on shooting a color chart.

Apologies if I wasn’t being clear enough, but I think you’re referring to the boxes on the color chart (like the Passport Checker). I’m talking about the boxes laid out over the vectorscope in FCPx, Resolve, etc.

Maybe I wasn't totally clear, I am aware of how to address color shift issues with the video color checker chart and some hue v hue curves, just dialing in the saturation is my problem. As far as I'm aware, you can't do it in a measurable way.
