getting a shot right in darkened room

I've mostly only shot interviews in studio lighting with my DVX100B and am looking for some suggestions/ideas on settings/the best way to get good shots of the following:
a match lighting in a dark room with the focus being on the match igniting and a second or two of the flame burning;
different objects or areas in a dark room being illuminated for a second or two by a light source.
Any suggestions appreciated--thanks!

A match lighting should look good even in a completely dark room with no additional light. I shot a match lighting at F2.8 1/48 shutter, and the flame itself actually clipped. It can be pretty intense especially when it first lights.

Thanks Joshua. Here's maybe a silly question--
how do you get the focus right? I always use manual focus but given that I want the flame that is not yet in existence to be in focus when I light it in front of the camera...

thanks-

that is a silly question. Focus and frame the match with the lights on, then strike the match in the same spot.
