Hi everyone, question here! My parents are going on a trip to malasya and Indonesia. My dad asked me if I wanted him to buy the HVX200 from there. What are the pros and cons of this deal????????????

thanks

If he bought one over there, it would probably be PAL. If you're in Utah, you want and NTSC camera.

P.S. What part of Utah are you from?

With all the craziness here, I wouldn't be surprised. :)

Secam is used in the French-speaking parts of Utah, PAL in the English speaking parts and NTSC in the few American-speaking regions. :)

All I know is NTSC. Never heard of PAL around here...these are my two concerns:

-WARRANTY
-CUSTOMS(AT AIRPORT)

help me out!

I got my DVX in Singapore. I lived in Bangkok for a while, but could not get a proper camera there. Literally nobody would tell me where I could find a pro camera shop, there were supposed to be 5 in BKK. The best thing that I could order was a PD170 in a consumer shop, which luckily I didn't...When I saw the name 'pro cam' on a map on the ground floor in a shopping mall my heart started pounding like crazy...as I entered level three and saw that 'pro cam' shop was a shop for camping and clothing, I ate my hat)

Anyway, I bought it in Singapore at Expandore (check out expandore.com). Great people, great service and they have all the (PAL)gear you could be wishing for. The guy from expandore said he hardly ever heard about people getting in trouble at customs...You can get a Mack Warranty, which is worldwide but you have to pay extra.

normally if you hand carry a camera across borders it's not a problem. but shipping it can be another story. some countries will really screw you.

Don't Bother

Don't Bother

The only thing you'll get a deal on in Malaysia and Indonesia are illegaly copied DVDs (some of which have been censored by Muslim film commissions). Neither country offers any benefits when buying high end electronics. And you'll likely have a very hard time finding an authorized retailer that will stock it. If you do, I doubt the price will be worth the hassle. Also keep in mind that with the dollar as weak as it is, you're getting completely hosed on the exchange rate. Not to mention paying for the forex.

I have also bought stuff at Expandor in Singapore, great prices and great people. Remember that as foreigner you are buying duty free, so you have to declare the item at the airport upon leaving the country (whether hand carried or in your luggage). it won't cost you anything, it is just to prove that the item has actually left the country. The issue is when you return to your own country. Then you have to make sure you've gotten rid of the box and wrapping so that it paases off as a personal item.

Having said that, compared to USA prices, I agree that buying in Singapore may not be worth it. For Europeans however, because of our strong Euro, buying in US dollars at near USA prices, instead of the much higher prices we often pay in Europe for video gear, can make a very significant difference even when you factor-in the trip.

best of luck

Couldn't agree more. I lived in London for 11 years. I bought almost all my consumer and pro gear in the States. Even PAL products are cheaper in the US.

thank you guys! I'll tell my dad not to get the camera. we'll get it later....

This is why I love this site so much!
