Getting a D40!

It tends to over expose, you're limited to AF-s, AF-I lens, the plus side is that sucker is LIGHT to carry, put it in a bag and zooooooooooooooom you are outta there.

I just got mine earlier this week and I love it! Mine came with a 55-200 af-s lens. It's true that it tends to overexpose but once u get the hang of it, changing the exposure to match what your shooting isn't too much of a nuisance. And for the price I can live with it. I think its a good purchase for my 1st SLR. Super lightweight and crystal clear lcd! It keeps me busy when I'm not shooting anything w/ the DVX.

I got offered $100 plus free drinks to take pictures of my friend's b-day party tonite! So I hope to recuperate the cost of the d40 soon!!

I hope u aren't offended since this is ur thread, but here's a picture I took the first day out w/ the d40. The picture is straight from the nikon, just added a border and signature in ps.

I feel I'm a total novice to the DSLR realm.

Does this mean that the D40 is only auto focus? I am looking for a 100% manual still camera.

I belive you have to use lenses that have the AF motor built in, or its 100% manual, but you can still use manual on the AF Lenses.

i have recently bought a d40 and i'm really happy with the purchase. It's a great starting camera and with a little tweking and diving into the menu you can take spectacular photo.

Greeting for your future purchase.

Getting a 2GB 133X Sandisk card, and looking at a few diffrent basic bags a circuit city!
Im so excited!

You're gonna love it. I bought my mom a d40 for christmas when it came out, she gets great shots from it. Before I switched to canon, I thought it would be funny to try out my 28-70 f/2.8 just to see how it would look on teh cute little d40: here's a pic: It performed just as well as it did on my d200, by the way...

The D40x is the newer version right? I'm considering picking that sucker up today actually.

Hm, now I'm considering the Rebel XTi - I really don't want to start a Canon vs. Nikon argument, so I'll just do my research before asking anymore questions.

Yeah? Well, I'm heading out to the store today...from what I can see, quality seems to be superb from both ends.

I'll hold both and decide. Thanks for that tip.

It was a minor feel to me - the nikon just felt more stout and solid in my hand. Canon was still well made though, it just wasnt for me.

I held both thanks to jdajda and to be completely honest - the Canon was doing it for me. I just couldn't get a comfortable grip on the Nikon for the life of me. I only have the stock 18-55mm lens, but so far its taking great shots!

I'm a big fan of the wide end of lenses myself so the 18-55 is my kinda lens :) Although I just upgraded to an 18-200 to do some more dogtography. Needed the extra length there. I say go with what you like. My dad has the Xti and loves it. I just dont like the way it feels. The nikon reminds me of how my really old pentax felt where it was just an extension of your hand. I dont think either brand is really that much better than the other though. Glad you're enjoying your camera!
