getting 720p/50 to SD pal in Mediacomposer

The last 2 years I/m filming with an Sony EX3 on 1080i for public television in the Netherlands. Of course they're still broadcasting in pal;(

I shoo t& edit the material in HD (project 1080i), double the fields with 0% motion effect (interlaced looks sharp but terrible) and finally transcode it to SD pal.

As i would like to end up with progressive video I now recorded in 720p/50
(MXF import XD CAM EX 35mbts) but there's no way I can transcode this to SD pal.

Does anyone know what to do?

- is there a workaround
-is doubling fields in 1080i a better option (is 720p less quality)?
-using FCP and then going to AVID (more work and transcoding loses quality)
-upgrading to avid 3.5? will resolve the problem.

hope someone can help me out

thanx!

I've never worked in PAL however, in ntsc we would click on the FORMAT TAB then choose what we want in the PROJECT TYPE. I do this all the time editing in either 1080i or 720P, then downrezzing to SD NTSC30i for clients still broadcasting in SD.

Thanx Mikey,

Thought as well - clicking the FORMAT TAB- would do the trick...
But as the projects is 720p/50 there's no alternative when I click on the FORMAT TAB.

It could be thatt his different in MC 3.5 or 4.0...
but otherwise then export the sequence (and then importing again in an SD project)
i don't see an option.

When you shoot in 720p/50
-what is the project setting you use (NTSC)?
-how do you get an SDI version in an AVID timeline (otherwise than exportin and importing again)?

thanx !

I have 2 Avids, you can click on the tabs on my 3.54 or my 3.13 versions.....? 720P is 60 here in the US. Not sure if this is a PAL issue...I follow similar steps in NTSC and it works perfectly... I then transcode everything in the HD timeline to DV25 and spit out a NTSC DV25 version of the whole thing. It works very smoothly.

When you set up the original project you did select 720P or 1080i correct? Now under the FORMAT tab, next to PROJECT SETTINGS choose SD 30I (NTSC OR PAL)...does this not work. Here is an article capturing low res then going to high, maybe it will help if you work it the opposite direction. Hope this helps....

The same in 3.5 and 4.0.2, 720p50 has only one option.

The workaround on capture from tape and import of ale files which are 1080 are to create a project for that and drag the media over with the media tool.

Tried to create a new 25fps project, open the bin containing the sequence copying and then downscaling and outputting over SDI?
