Gettin' the 24pn OUT

Has anybody sucessfully outputted full rez DVCPRO 720p/24pn footage from an Avid Adrenaline to tape or P2?

What are the options, without having to transcode the media to DNx? Is it true that there isn't a way to output full rez 24fps DVCPRO to tape or P2. Is the workaround to output 720p/60p out to tape? How would that be accomplished?

I'm stuck.

There is no DVCPRO HD 24p Tape. You need to layoff to DVCPRO HD tape 60p and turn on the user bits so that the 24p flags get set into the tape so if someone wants to redigitize at 24p and remove the flagged frames they can.

Thanks Jeremy.

Will the Avid automatically stream at 24pn timeline as 60p DVCPRO HD over firewire? Or is there a setting somewhere that needs to be changed? The video output tool only has cross-conversion to 1080i....

I am not sure as I have not edited 24p DVCPRO HD on an Avid. In FCP, the pulldown is added. I am sure the Avid (if it allows 720p24 editing of DVCPRO HD) will add the pulldown to get you up to 720p60. Are you having trouble or are you just trying to iron out a workflow?

I intially made the assumption that the Avid Adrenaline DNA automatically converts a full rez DVCPRO HD 24pn timeline into a 60p stream over firewire to get to tape, however I am unable to test this since I don't have a DVCPRO HD deck on hand. Has anyone had success going this route?

Also, how does one export the 24pn footage as a file for quicktime (or MXF) playback. There doesn't seem to be an option in the Quicktime Movie settings for DVCPRO HD, or MXF for that matter. When I chose "same as source" as the method to export, the .mov file that is exported is a blank white screen when opened in quicktime. The PC gives and error stating "you may experience problems playing video....because the compressor coulnd not perform a needed operation". Looks as though the codec isn't available in Quicktime.

As I understand it, there's no DVCPRO HD quicktime codec for PC. How are you monitoring your footage? If you are monitoring with a CRT, then Avid is definitely adding the pulldown to get you to 720p60. If you export a movie, on the other hand, it will still be 23.98. If you want to see the movie on another PC (without Avid) then you will have to install the Avid codec on that PC. If you want something universal (to show on PC and Mac) then I would export to something like the Animation codec in Quicktime, or this new Sheer codec that everyone seems to be using to go back and forth between PC/Mac. The Animation codec is free with quicktime, the sheer codec you would have to buy. the reader is free though, for the people on the other end. Does this help or make sense?
