Get 9.5 Stops of dynamic range from your DVX100

I was groovin on this until I read that Andromeda isn't MS-system compatable.

All the more reason to get it- what a great excuse to finally switch platforms and come over to the light.

Seriously though- I know what you mean, I felt the same way with DVrack ... But as Juan stated, the file is system and NLE independent, so you only need a mac mini to capture the footage, you can then take it back to your PC for editing.

Well, I still would need that mini-mac, for the capture.

Although the pricing breakdown for the Andromeda mod+mini mac, as compared to an HVX kit, is pretty compelling.

I guess I could live with a mac in the suite, as a special-purpose tool.

The only sad part about going Andromeda over the HVX is the loss of variable frame rates :(

Other than that I'm sooooo very tempted by Andromeda.

That's correct, i'd say that's one of the main differences. The CCD's on the DVX can't do 60fps.

It's all a matter of what you need, and if being able to do 60fps on a compressed codec is worth the extra $6k or so. :)

Considering the success you've shown with "upressing" I would think you could get 60Fps SD by "upressing" the interlaced into progressive. No?

We're not uprezzing. The three SD sensors on the DVX act as a single HD sensor because they are shifted from each other.

You can do all sorts of weird stuff with interlaced footage but it wouldn't be real 60P.

Cheers,
Juan

So how´s the Xl2 mod going?
And will there be any RealStream partner in the EU, so I won´t have to sent my cany over the deep blue sea?
I mean, you have sharks and grizzlies over there, don´t cha?

We will certainly have new products, however what those products will be depends on the feedback received for the DVX100 Andromeda system.

The XL2 is a strong contender for an Andromeda adaptation(together with the HVX) simply because it has exchangeable lenses and progressive sensors with pixel shift. The sensors are also 960x720.

Could you give a ruff estimation, sth like 3 to 6 months, on how long the XL2 mod will last? Are you testing already or is it still in the brainstorming phase?

Chris

Hmmm... what do you thing you could pull from an XL2 then?? 1920x1080? Could be fun

Chris:
We haven't started on an XL2 system yet.

mmm:
It depends on what kind of pixel shift it has. If it is not diagonal(for example only horizontal pixel shift) then the resolution can only be increased horizontally. Another factor is that areas of the CMOS sensors are usually not read out by the camera's normal operation, so it is a big question mark if we can modify the system to output those unused pixels. Yet another issue is that the sensors are 4:3, etc.

We haven't taken a close look at it, but the XL2 seems like a better candidate than the interlaced XL-H1.

The PC will most probably be supported at a future date. However, like I said before, it's a matter of what tools you need to make your final product match your vision. If $500 for a mac mini seems like an unrealistic option, then you probably can do without uncompressed 4:4:4 footage in the first place. $500 is still a tiny fraction of what an HVX setup would cost, so if the 60fps and better portability of an HVX is worth the additional $4k-$6k, then that's probably an option better suited for your application.

Cheers,
Juan

Using the mini mac wouldn't be too bad... but if you have to also hook up an extra firewire drive too then that starts getting to be too much. What is the largest drive that someone has put into the mini and can the whole hard drive be used. In other words is it going to be able to capture video quickly enough on the last 10 minutes of the HD space as it will on the first 10 minutes???

Compared to what? An uncompressed tape recorder?

Errrr.... WOW!

I sure wouldn't want to carry that around! Nope that wouldn't work for those shots they took in Gladiator with the SteadyCam moving around the arena!!

That is what I'm looking for. Something that is a bit more mobile but can still get some great looking shots. There are lots of shots you wouldn't need to worry about as they would be more static or on a dolly. But there are many shots that would require mobility too.
