Finally organized all my gels which were living in complete randomness between 2 garden buckets and were difficult to transport. Thought I would share the idea since I got the idea from another lighting tech. who I work with.

Each of my lamps now has a dedicated box of gel cut to size and ready to go. The boxes are made out of plasticore (the same stuff that Kino Flo uses for their lamp heads) and contain:

1 Full CTB
1 1/2 CTB
1 1/4 CTB

1 Full CTO
1 1/2 CTO
1 1/4 CTO

ND 9
ND 6
ND 3

216
250
Opal

I have sizes for 150, 300 and 650 fresnels. I like having a dedicated box for each lamp as you can have a gel box living with its own light as opposed to a centralized box for all the gel. Everything fits convenientely into a milkcrate. My plan is to build a 2nd crate with larger sizes - 2K's and Kino Flo's.

That is a great system indeed, and for a type A personality like me would be perfect. Right now I have my gel scraps in a folder, each labled with their size and what they are.

What sizes are you cutting your gels for each of the light sizes?

For my 150's I'm cutting them 7"x7", 300's are 10"x10" and the 650's are 14"x14". The 150 sizing is just about right, the 300's could really be 11"x11" and the 650's have plenty - I could probably get them down to 13"x13". Cutting them more rectangular would also probably help a little with any excess spill though it's not too bad as it is right now.

Nice thread! Did you ever put together a bigger kit for Kinos and 2ks? What size did you cut them?

I've cut a few pieces for a short 4x kino. I'm out of town right now and can't remember what size they are. You can cut color correction gel smaller than diffusion as you can gel it right at the tubes. Diffusion you generally want to gel at the doors.

I've been meaning to cut some for a long 4x kino but I need to buy/find some larger pieces to accommodate.

Barry,

Love the BC clothespegs, Im inspired to move my gels out of the Golf Bag . . . .

But not that inspired.

Good Stuff.

I'm impressed, good plan. I keep my smaller gels rolled up all mixed together in a cardboard tube from a paper towel roll.

How do you label your gels? I think what I do is pretty standard. For CTB and CTO, don't put the type on, just label Q H or F for 1/4, 1/2 or 1/1. Add CTS and the strength for straw. Use the Lee numbers, 216, 250, 251, etc.

I'm often on shoots where someone else has brought stuff so my name is on each sheet.

I use only one size, 10" X 12" for nearly all my lights and prefer the simplicity. I don't use gel frames, never had any, so I got in the habit of just pinning the gels to the barndoors with C-47s. For softboxes I have some big pieces cut from full roll width and pin them in front of the grid, usually.
