Geez, do you have to be a rocket scientist to work this firmware thing out?

Okay, just so's I'm clear…

Tick "Version Change" and set the increment to like 24 or something like that.
Tick "Version Compare".
Select NO OTHER boxes.
Save firmware as GH1__132.bin and load as per Ptool Manual Instructions.

Correct?

Just tried that myself Stephen and it didn't work for me. Getting worried I may have a brick now....

You probably should get confirmation on this, but I believe you can just set the number in version increment to something way higher (it doesn't have to be only 1 higher than the previous version, I believe). It won't end up mattering because if you do the version compare option as well, it's setting the firmware to read as 0.0 anyway.

It will simply look at that number, say, "Yep, that's higher, let's load it up." Then while it's loading it, it says, "What version of firmware is this again? 0.0? Ok,"

Next time you load firmware, any firmware number will be considered higher.

Also, this (I believe) allows the original firmware (or unaltered official firmware, I don't think there's a place to download the actual original) to be loaded on the camera again and if you sent it in to Panasonic, there's probably no way they could tell it was hacked (probably.)

Just tried that methodology and I can confirm it doesn't work. I checked both boxes and tried several times with numbers and increments I haven't used before and nothing. The problems is that now I changed the increments and version number so many times I don't know where to go back to. Checking "Version Compare Patch" makes no difference at all.

Okay fixed, but..... I got it going by trying every combination of firmware name and increment number I had used. This was trial and error. I don't know why that first "version Change" option is still in PTools. There is just so potential to go wrong if you forget or lose track of you FW verssion number and increment combination. Th weird thing is that once you have stated that way, you can't switch to the automated "version compare patch" method.

So.... I loaded what I call 1.37 FW with the high-speed "C" options enabled for AVCHD, but when I analyse the FHD clips in Premiere Pro, it says they are 2.2mbs.

1. That can't be right can it?
2. Plus the Camera version number still says V1.3. is that correct?
3. How do you know what version you have installed?

Sorry for all the questions.

if you selected Version Compare, your FW would be 0.0. So that means, this time around you need to select

Version Change: Change this number to 50, that way you know exactly what number your're on and it's probably higher than any number you've chosen thus far. Save your FW GH1__150.bin

Version Compare: After this is checked, any new FW's you load from here on out, you can skip the Version Change patch and not have to worry which increment you're on.

Is it 2.2MB or 2.2Mb? There's a difference. 2.2MB is roughly 17 Mega bits. AVC is a variable codec. if you're not shooting any type of high detail scenery or action, your codec will drop.

Same here. seems to be working. Thanks Rich, Stephen and everyone else for fixing. Think I need to go and take a chill pill.

Hmm.....back to firmware updating problems. I followed Car3o's mod, but I wasn't happy with the picture quality I'm getting with 50 - 60 mbit settings. I've tried enabling 25P native and saving new FW but can't update again.

Is it just me or is the PQ of the GH1 quite underwhelming? Maybe it's okay for web video, but I intercut test footage shot at maximum hack quality and it didn't cut it with the Varicam footage. It's not just sharpness but a temporal quality that broadcast cameras have in progressive frame that is not the same on these DSLR's. And that includes the 5D and 7D. I'm feeling that the hype is greater than the actuality.

I had better luck with intergrating 7D footage into TV commercials with HPX camcorders. The GH1 pictures are VERY noisy in the blacks; much more so than a 7D. I don't know, maybe it's my settings but I am far from blown away.

If you know of better footage than the clip below then please share it with us. Until then I would say I am not sure there is a camera within 10x of the GH13's price that can keep up with it.

Awesome video from Eric Thompson

What?? The GH1 is not as good as a Varicam?? I feel so ROBBED!! I can't believe I spent $700 on this darned camera!! ;)

BTW, if you get confused about FW increments or whatever, just reload the factory firmware. It's just that simple....camera is as good as new.

Yeah I know that's sound bad in context, but it's relevant I feel. The only way we can judge new technology is comparing it to the best, and I agree the DSLR's can be amazing, more amazing than cameras costing many times more, but there are shortcomings when working in marginal shooting conditions that a 2/3" or similar camera can sail through.

For broadcast it's not a cost issue, but an aesthetic issue. (Preaching will stop now while I go and play with my GH1)
