Gattaca

after 12 years and countless viewings, i am continuously blown away by the look of this movie. I have yet to see it in Blu-Ray, but I told my wife that Gattaca is the reason i want a new tv. am i wrong?

I have Gattaca on Blu-ray. I love this movie but I would not say this particular movie looks SO MUCH better in HD.

*If* the DVD transfer of Gattaca is top-notch and you have a player with really good upconversion, the DVD copy may look pretty much as good as Blu-Ray anyway. I have the Crtiterion (I *think*) DVD issue of Once Upon a Time in the West and I swear it looks like good Blu-Ray all the way, but it's just a really excellent DVD transfer.

I can't explain why, but to me some movies look great even if 'just' on DVD and higher resolution doesn't necessarily make them look better.

A lot of Gattaca's visual impact is that clean austere beauty, and I'm not convinced that will be particularly enhanced by being seen in higher res.

I might disagree on that. Depending on the size of the TV the up conversion looks horrible.

I have a 53" Sony and Bluray looks amazing (sharper than the movie theater) but the uprezzed DVD's or TV shows look really bad. You can see the mosquito noise everywhere.

My previous TV was 36" and I couldnt even see HD because it was too small.

You have to get the right TV size for your room. Too large and you are looking at noise, too small and you are looking at a SD picture.

PS: I was watching Aliens (SD) on my bluray and the image quality is great, but when the bluray version comes out I am sure it will be uncomparable.

I'm running a 67" HL67A750 Samsung LED DLP unit, fed by a Samsung PD-1500 BluRay player.

Some DVDs look awful when uprezzed, it's true. There are a few that look competitive with blu-ray, to me.

Of course the equipment is only part of it; individual perception has a lot to do with it, too.

Right, this is pretty much my feeling.

Usually HD discs show a drastic improvement, but not this particular one. Also see here: http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/178/gattaca.html Hmm, they gave it 4.5 out of 5 in terms of HD video quality. I guess they are right that colors and grayscale look good. It is just not that many of small details to pop out. I bought the Blu-ray anyway because I just love the film. I've decided to buy only those Blu-ray discs that I can watch 5-10 or more times, the ones that I truly love, like Blade Runner or Back to the future (has not been released yet).
