Gas prices

You know some guys did make a car that ran off of kitchen grease a while back. That's some nice cheap fluid =D.

I remember in oh 1990-91 a big story in the news that claimed some scientists had a way to get nuclear fusion off the ground (fission - fusion the one the turns water into energy)...It was a big deal....Them BAM! Some undisclosed bunch of other scientists debunked the whole idea as complete and utter gibberish. I'd be willing to bet my next years wages that that formula is sitting in the vault of the Opec gods at this very moment collecting dust. Things of this nature put me over the top because somewhwere in the back of my underpowered cranium, I believe it's true.

It would be a holy grail that every half-competent physicist in the world would be looking for if it could be done. The immortal fame and vast, vast fortune has to be quite an incentive to try.

There's not enough money in the world to throw hush money at every single scientist who might try it.

It was debunked because it wasn't true . . .

Agreed. It was definitely false. The worlds first fusion plant is going to be built soon though! It's going up in France no too long from now. We'll see if they can pull it off!

I'm convinced there are alternatives to what we have currently available to us; I'm also convinced the powers that be have influence in these matters.

So we're saying the first guys were wrong and a mere fifteen years later the french are building an entire plant?

Is it possible for you to remember where you got this info and post?:)

Or even more to the point....Is it possible I could get of my lazy ass and google it for myself?

I was cool til I got to the part about creating a "star on earth" then I lost it. That's just what I need to know before I close my peepers at night....Far away across the ocean, some guy with a sliderule, screwdriver and electron microscope is building a ****ing star on earth.......Good Lord!

Fusion is not making energy out of water.

It's in fusing two hydrogen atoms into one helium atom.

Thanks David.....Wishful thinking on my part I guess.

Some interesting selections:

In terms of the physics and huge amounts of energy involved, the Iter project would be akin to building a star on Earth.

To use controlled fusion reactions on Earth as an energy source, it is necessary to heat a gas to temperatures exceeding 100 million Celsius - many times hotter than the centre of the Sun.

One kilogram of fusion fuel would produce the same amount of energy as 10,000,000 kg of fossil fuel.

My ignorance in this field is what sets me to worrying....I feel like one of the naysayers of the Stevenson rocket telling people not to ride the train cos the human body was not meant to withstand speeds of 30 miles per hour....I just hope the french get it all worked out and install one in my gastank when it's finnished!

I'm going back old school... Horse carriages and a donkey name Tony. I don't know whats going on but I have a F-250 and that mofo eats gas like AnnaNicole eats pickles and wrinkley old men.

shaw is recollecting correctly re the kitchen grease idea, it works.

an entire community in the pacific nw is emerging where they recycle frying oil (grown by our favorite farmers as soy and other oil producing crops like corn) and converting it through a simple process. the net cost today is about 1.30 a gal.

the more one reads, the more it becomes clear that biodiesel is fuel efficient, helps with greenhouse gasses by converting co2 to fixed carbon, and thereby moves to correct global warming. diesel cars are here today and burn the stuff without any modification.

if just 10% of commuters would convert, we would collectively and individually reverse our dependence on imported non renewable petrol and convert to a solar renewable resource that is on the net good for the environment.

funny, this solution is available today, would cost very little to promote, and can be done at home. what is most compelling is that it dosen't require a huge investment in nuclear engineering like fusion.

wonder what economic forces really don't want general application. big oil perhaps? major power companies? perhaps the people need to vote with their feet?

think about it next car you buy...
