GAS in December

Run&Gun

Veteran
Well, the end of the year is upon us once again, so I just wanted to see who else is suffering from GAS in December?

I just spent a hefty chunk of money yesterday. One of my reps hit me up to let me know that they were going to have to start collecting sales tax for several more states starting today, including mine, so they obviously suggested if I wanted to get some of the gear I had been looking at/quoted, then it was the time to do it instead of waiting to the last few days of the year like normal. So I should have some early Christmas presents here by the end of the week. Would it be weird to wrap them and put them by the tree...?

Absolutely not.

I have been doing this since 5-years-old every year I had a few bucks and bought something for myself from the dollar store with my mom.

In my young adult years, I once wrapped up a cinema camera that was almost $9,000.

It would be weird NOT to!

I like the way you think... Maybe I'll wrap some and play with just one(probably the Teradek). The Gemini would take up a lot of space and look good next to the tree. Wonder if I have enough paper to wrap that box?

Kinda funny, I received a call from Vitec this afternoon letting me know they were running specials on some Litepanels and Anton/Bauer batts for the end of the year.

Just bought a Movi Pro. No tax reason in the UK but still GAS to the max :)

I know you've been looking around and wanting to get a new gimbal. Had a chance to play with it, yet? Travis is running a group buy over on REDUser on the Easyrig(he posted on DVX, as well). I know some people use them to help carry/support not just cameras, but handheld electronic gimbals. I swore I'd never use an Easyrig(and used to make fun of the guys that used them back in the day), but as cameras get less ergonomic and less balanced and producers want to shoot longer and longer, I hate to admit that I'm starting to contemplate one. At least for certain types of shoots.

Most of the time I always enjoyed purchasing a variety of small items early in the season and wrapping/storing them immediately.

When it was time to open - maybe one a few days before Christmas, one on C-Eve, one on C-Day - sometimes I would forget 3-4 weeks later what I had bought and was opening. It's fun.

There's also a limit...can't be opening 10 presents from yourself in front of people, haha.

Guilty:

1. Fujifilm X-T3 arrived yesterday - have a few shoots already scheduled with it so I can't wrap it and put it under the tree!
2. Fujinon 18-55mm f/2.8-4.0
3. Fujinon 16mm f/1.4
4. Zhiyun Crane 2
5. Fringer Fuji X adapter

Although to be fair, I am not going to term these GAS products as I mostly bought them since my Crane 1 died, I rented it out for two client shoots in November and need a new gimbal as clients want and are paying me for it. And the X-T3 is for 4K gimbal (clients specifically asked me to get 4K instead of the 1080 from the 80D) and also so I don't have to haul my full C200 rig and 80D all over the world to shoot stock stills and footage, which is 100% a business directive to increase passive income as I head into probably my final decade of full time production. So even though I am making excuses, none of it bought simply because I wanted it, I needed it for my business. I know, I know...

First year in a very long time that I'm not Jonesing for year end gear.

Although I have been trying to convince my wife that my Porsche needs 700 horse power.

No year end gear for me this year, but if GAS applies to non work gear, I did buy a PS4 for “surviving” winter months and some Bose Sleepbuds for travel.

Waiting for the Panasonic S1 in Q1!

I thought about it and weighed the coming tax change with the end of year sales vs waiting til later and possible (likely) price decreases/sales with time. I then called and talked to a rep and if I bought a lot at once they gave me another discount so I went ahead and let my GAS rip! And now I have to sell my cars, house and a kidney! Haha. Not exactly...
But I did go ahead and gear up for live switching, step up my photography and working on a setup for vehicle to vehicle shooting. Broke down and bought the 4K remote POV cam I've been wanting for 2 years for events and also car mounting. And finally got a Wacom Cintiq for easier graphic work.

I'm just about where I want to be now in gear capabilities so from about 2019 forward I plan on cutting GAS off until a forced upgrade beyond 4K occurs. The Van and gear expenses this year spread over the next several years will help offset future income in those coming years that I don't have many expenses while saving for a studio. Thankfully things are going much better now that I don't have a crooked scoundrel partner tearing it all down from the inside.

yup -- Since the beginning of november I've added a GH5s, some Quasar Science led tubes, a Zhiyun Weebill Lab gimbal, and a bunch of odds and ends: cardellini clamps, spring clamps, stingers, etc. Still have my eye on some more Contax Zeiss lenses and new gear cases (as I'll be travelling to New Orleans and London for work in jan/feb).

I'm seriously lusting after the new Canon Xf705. The face tracking DPAF alone is going to make my life a lot easier, and so is the servo zoom.

I'm being a good boy and waiting until all the reviews come out, then I'll rent it to make sure everything works like I need it to. But damn, my finger hovers over the "add to cart" button almost every day...

Well, I managed to make it another year without buying another (real) camera. I'm still milking my VariCam's, F55 and C300. I actually like my 55 more and more the longer I have it.

This felt like a "lighting year". Added a few Intelytech 2x2's earlier this year, 2x Nila Boxers, a Gemini this summer, 2x Hive 200C's(still waiting), 2x Westcott Ice Lights and just got my second Gemini. Oh yeah, and two little LumeCube's, too.

The last kind of big thing I have my eye on this year, and for some reason it really speaks to me, is the Sigma 105mm T1.5.

Zak, check these out. https://honeycrates.com/collections/led-light-fixtures/products/q20c-50º-1-3-fits-quasar-2-crossfade I just bought some for a few of my 4' Quasar's and received them yesterday.
