Game changing stabilizing device?

I said this in the other thread but it bears repeating:

"And who is really going to trust the "majestic mode" where the gears compensate for your movement so you can move & frame by yourself?" Still need a focus puller too btw.

majestic mode should have been called "point and pray". I'm sure this is good if you are doing a straight tracking, leading, or following shot that doesn't require anything of a pan or tilt, but still! Almost all moves need a little adjustment! Think about a dolly shot! How many times is the shot simply a dolly in, out or side tracking.... yet you still have to do minor adjustments. I can't remember a time where the move was perfect from one end to the other and I locked the camera off and did nothing during the shot.

That is going to be the frequency of majestic mode on most shots, imo. Unless you compensate by moving the camera, which is different aesthetically. IE, instead of dollying in and needing to tilt up as you get close, you adjust so that you raise the camera as you get closer. One solves the issue of not having an additional operator, while ruining how the shot originally felt.

I don't like compromising the mood/feeling a composition gives because we didn't hire the required crew for the gear we rented. Lame sauce

Look, I think its a great idea. But its novel at its best. It might be great at f16 or a camera with 1/3" sensor but I can't wait to see someone actually put it to some use - they'll soon realize the shot they're capable of doing could have just as easily been done on dolly, slider, or steadicam.

And for that reason, I'm out.

The more I look at the footage and the setup the more this looks like a very niche tool. Yes I say tool cause I think this could be a useful tool in film-making, but I think you will have to go out of your way to design shots to use it cause most of the shots could be better executed with a steadicam. So a tool non-the less to get those very difficult shots if you need them, but could go without them.

Impressive what technology does allow these days.

It's the bee's knees! (trying to bring back a dead phrase, instead of "game changer")

I agree with some of the posts. My back is hurting just looking at it. Hopefully they'll add an arm.

...an arm with a spring that attaches to a vest would be a good idea.

It's like a fig rig with a motorized pan tilt head from a jib. According to Vincent's blog it says

The MoVI can travel in a thin suitcase as carry luggage and weights under 4 pounds…

So 6 oz-15 pounds added (if it's a MKIII or a Red Epic).

I cannot see that it will take the chinese very long to copy this product which will end up costing about 1K ;)

I think the attitudes towards this device will change when it comes down in price, which it definitely will, and there's more of them floating around out there. Right now I see a lot of , I did it the old way and I'm sticking to that! This won't do what I did the old way! This won't look exactly the same as my steadicam, dolly track, or whatever way I did things before so I don't like it!

Ok, sure, but put this in the hands of some new younger film makers with no preconceptions and see what happens.

I wouldn't hold my breath for a price like that. Because of the price of MoVi, any knock off version will still demand a premium price; much cheaper, I am sure, but I doubt that low.

Time will tell. It always does.

BTW, it doesn't use servos so noise is not a factor.

For those who say "I'd rather use a steadicam", well....I understand that. However, if you had never used a steadicam before and needed a reliable shot with a smaller, lighter camera which do you think would work better?

The pro steadicam operators will still be earning their paychecks. This simply allows a different way to accomplish certain shots with cameras under a certain weight.

My first "steadicam" was a Steadicam Jr. I dare anyone to hold that out in front of themselves for a 30 second shot. Go ahead. Try.

Have not read whole thread, sorry if this was asked already.

When can we rent this thing?

I am sure that it will be available for rent when it is available. I bet most medium sized markets and larger will have more than a couple of owner/operators that will rent them out as well as the bigger rental outfits.

Not a big fan of the MoVi, think it's more evolutionary than revolutionary. And believe, there will be a Chinese product a fraction of the cost within 12 months. But, this Swedish Aerial Cinematographer is really excited because he doesn't have to stabilize his footage in post any longer. All his stuff is great and he is frequently a Vimeo Staff pick. If you have the space, download the 1GB original .mov file.
