Game Changer? Zeiss Compact Primes w/interchangeable mounts.

Those have been around for over a year. Much discussion on them.

They're a revision of the original Compact Primes. Instead of being a hard PL mount, they have interchangeable mounts. Other than that they're functionally identical to the earlier ones.

The big difference is that mirror-box SLRs like the 5D/7D etc can't take many PL mount lenses because the back of the lenses protrude so far that they'd smack into the mirror. The CP.2's avoid that by making native mounts for each of the different types of cameras.

thanks barry. I haven't heard of anybody using them or any houses carrying them. it seems like such a great tool for the 5d/7d

I just don't see the point. If you have the budget for lenses like these instead of Zeiss' regular DSLR lenses, why use a DSLR in the first place?

Maybe you need a handheld body for whatever reason, like you're trying to shoot a scene in a public place without any permits :-p

Oh sure, you have $27,000.00 handy to purchase a set of CP.2 lenses but can't afford a permit to shoot a scene.

All the Best!

well, assuming you can rent them and not buy them, it makes a lot of sense. you get a much cheaper body with the dslr vs say a RED, Film Camera, etc and like the other poster said advantages of the small body as well.

laforet just used them on his last spot so they must have some purpose huh

Really, these types of lenses have no real glass purpose for video work. I've seen rigorous tests that prove how some of Nikon's cheap primes are of better quality, for both photographs, video, and in terms of clarity, sharpness, distortion and fringing, than most Zeiss lenses. The only area I've seen Zeiss excel in is in terms of super-wide angle lenses like 8mm, but other than that, glass is glass. Canon in particular makes such horrid quality glass at times that people are compelled to say that Zeiss is automatically better, but the reality is that whoever says that probably has no exposure to how grand many of Nikon's lenses truly are.

But then again, not even Nikon nor Zeiss make any difference concerning DSLR video - on average, among all the testings I've seen, I'd say glass makes a %10 effect, if even that much, on the way video quality is captured.
