Can someone explain to me the purpose of GAIN in video especially with the dvx-100a, i know it is not useable on f5/f6 setting on the dvx-100.

Can anyone elucidate in much detail, what gain actualy does, and the effects and lim itations of the setting.

Gain is a digital pumping up the luminance. It just works like this: you opened up but the image is still dark, you wen't to slow shutter, but it still did not solve your problems, so you turn the gain, and the image brightens up.

BUT,

the gain is not magical. It will not bring you any info your camera wasn't able to capture, and the result of this limitation is grain. Horrible looking grain everywhere (but a brighter picture). If you were to witness a crime during the night with your camera in hand, you should use it, otherwise, just forget about it.
