Gain Test including AF101, EX-3 and XL-H1......

Hi,

Since i really got a lot from this Forum over the last few Weeks in preparing for the AF101 i thought i should contribute something.
So i looked at the Equipment in our Office and thought about something that might be of Interest.

Noise is discussed a lot.
So I made a Gain Test with the AF101, EX-3 and the old Version of the XL-H1. For comparison.. In front of the same Background.
I used a Nanoflash with all 3 of them.
The recording Format in all 3 Cases was 1080 25p… 50mbit longgop...

I uploaded all the Nanofiles including the AVCHD Folder from the SD card. (used Timecode Trigger with the Nanoflash so they are the same as the Nanofiles )

www.mydrive.ch
usr: af101@tet22
pwd: agaf101

Now.. All those files never saw an editing System. They are straight from the Cards. I just renamed the AF101 Nanofiles for better Orientation.
What i did is make short films in which i left the different Gain settings on for just a few seconds. Starting with the best 0 Gain and ending with the worst.
The AF i switched from 400 to 800 and 3200 ISO. Or in Video Cam Mode from 0 to 6 to 12 db. EX-3 is from 0 to 9 to 18 db. And XL-H1 is from -3 to 0 to 6 to 12 and 18 db.

With the AF101 i used the Standard Scene Files from F1 to F6. I only changed the Format to 1080 25p in all cases.
And there is one customized Setting called "ownsettings" :
Film Cam
Detail Level -7
V-Detail -4
Detail Coring +2
Chroma Level -2
Master Ped -2
Cine Like V
Matrix Fluo

XL-H1 and EX-3 are in Factory Settings. Standard lenses. On the AF there is a Voigtländer 0.95 25mm.
I really look forward to hear what you guys are thinking……..

Thanks for that test, I just have a bit of hard time downloading the files, it just wouldn' play.. could you possibly put one video file, in similar setting all the cameras one after another, no gain, minimum iso, please, thanks in advance!

What is your opinion, really interested to compare a veteran H1 to the newer players!!

I couldn't get the files to play either, the QT player said they were all "in a format quicktime doesn't understand."

tet, what size is the file? i can give you a guest login to my server and have you upload it there so it'll be just a link. also throw it up on vimeo, that might be enough to see comparables

Hi,

I posted this 2 months ago when Noise was discussed alot so its not really up to Date ;) ..
even deleted the Xl-H1 Files...

....I just downloaded one File and it plays normal in Quicktime on my Mac..
they are original Nano Files, so thats exactly what you get when you record in QT to CF on a Nano.. Just renamed them.....

I do know PC users who cant watch native Nano Files without a little help..
here is what Convergent Design suggests:
http://www.calibratedsoftware.com/QXD.asp

or, if you want to make the effort, you could make the QT Files to MXF Files with this little Software:
http://convergent-design.com/Downloads/tabid/1650/Default.aspx
..its called "FileConverter, XDCAM .MOV to .MXF (Mac or Pc)" and you can download it on the bottom of the Page...

...and then you use something like this on a PC to view it:
https://www.servicesplus.sel.sony.com/sony-software.aspx?model=PDZ-VX10

or on a Mac:
https://www.servicesplus.sel.sony.com/sony-software.aspx?model=pdzkp1

...it is complicated but if i would mess about with the original Nanofiles, like recoding etc, this would probably be a bad reference then... on the other hand its only 50 mbit so its not the best possible Recording anyway....

Regarding the Quality of the Af101 compared to the old Xl-H1..... :) .... it beats the hell out of the Canon.. The H1 was a good Cam 5 Years ago and i had good Times with it... but for today Standards it doesnt hold up...

But I must say this... the H1 was way easier to handle than the Af101...Much more Foolproof....

If you want i can try to find the H1 files and upload them again?
