Gain settings in Dark Environments

Hey I was wondering how much experience you have with using the gain settings in dark situations and if there is a certain limit you should use.

I believe I set my shutter speed to 1/24 and put my gain to +9db.

I did not see any noise in my footage. I set it to +9db instead of +12db since I remember reading in an article about some MTV show where they used dvx's and the guy was raving about being able to go to +9db without noise.

Anybody here use +12db?

+12 gain is the devil! I've used+3 with the 1/24 shutter on subjects that don't move too much and been happy with the results.

Please use lights of any kind before adding any gain if possible. You can always shoot in normal lighting and darken or CC in post and you'll have much better results.

Gain bad...light good!

I wouldnt use anything above 6. And would try to avoid it if possible, that said I have got some decent shots with it.
