Gain questions

Hey everyone, Got a few gain related Q's...

On my old HV20 it would chuck gain in when and where required, not sure how much but it did it anyway and the results were pretty good considering.

On the 150 the only way to get the gain to kick by itself is in AUTO mode but what am I losing out on by running the cam in this setting?

Ideally I'd like to turn the cam on and have it running ready to rock with a previously setup custom WB that wont change (no ATW tracking), automatic gain for video and also for audio, plus the ability to nudge the iris roller to push or pull exposure compensation.

Is this possible or am I asking too much :)

Last Q is when you do nudge the IRIS roller, does it show you on screen that you are EV+/- ? I havent noticed anything to say this myself so just wanted to check :)

Thanks folks!

There is no auto audio gain whatsoever. Can't happen no matter what mode you put it in.

If you want automatic video gain, the only way to get that is with the AUTO switch. You can customize what functions go into automatic mode with the AUTO SW menu. You can choose whether the auto switch enables auto focus, auto iris, auto gain, or auto white balance, or any combination thereof. So if you want your own white balance, you'd turn ATW to off.

There's no EV +/- indicator, but you can see the iris change. However, after a second or so the autoiris will compensate back to what it thinks is proper exposure. If you want to manually override exposure, you'd do it by either a) popping the iris to auto by pressing the iris button, letting it settle in, then pressing the iris button again to go to manual and adjusting to taste, or b) using the A.IRIS menu setting in the scene file menus to establish a fixed amount of over/underexposure, or c) using the user buttons and SPOTLIGHT or BACKLIGHT functions to force around a 1.5 stop exposure compensation.

Thanks very much for the reply Barry, its helpful advice like this that made me buy your new book without a second thought!

I think nudging the IRIS roller doesnt automatically kick back to what you had before. I tested that a few days ago. Pointed the cam at a wall, flicked the roller and left it and it didnt self correct.

I'll double check when I get in again tonight but im almost positive. It would be a worthwhile feature as my old Canon HV20 had it :)
