GH4 g7 vs gh4

Here are a few sample clips. Download them for best watching.

This was 60p, AVCHD at 6400 ISO, rendered to ProRes then compressed to H264.

Ummmm - coming from a GH1 - this looks unbelievably good for those ISOs! (obviously i am talking about the picture quality... not the dancing :cheesy: )

1)What lens were you using/ aperture?

2)No way you could get this much light with a 180 degree shutter right? - you shooting at 60fps?

3)Is this clean footage or have you used some denoise?

4)You have a GH4 I think... would it be as good as this at those ISOs or do you think there is a low light boost on the G7?

Rokinon 10mm, f2.8

2)No way you could get this much light with a 180 degree shutter right? - you shooting at 60fps?

I shot at 1/200 not sure what that means in degrees, and yes 60p

3)Is this clean footage or have you used some denoise?

This is direct from camera, no changes.

4)You have a GH4 I think... would it be as good as this at those ISOs or do you think there is a low light boost on the G7?

I do not have a GH4, just a GH2. The G7 was my latest upgrade.

Those are some very nice samples for those high iso's Brandon !!!

I was super pleased with the in cam noise reduction of the G6. I have always seen and heard that the GX7 sensor was the best low light sensor Panasonic made for it's DSLM mirror less lineup. This would concur with that sentiment in the G7 and might be a viable option for lower light work.

Also if you are going to be shooting in 1080-60p most of the time, the MP4 option is much cleaner workflow than AVCHD. Just simple sequential *.mp4 28mbps files to off load without transcoding. On the G6 the 1080-60p AVCHD and MP4 files are identical. The 1080-24p mp4 files were only 20mbps, but had a very nice aesthetic vs the tiny bit sharper avchd 24p files. Curious if that is the same on the G7 or not.

Thanks for the uploaded samples !!!

Cheers,
Pete

No reason to take up the extra space or processing power for 4k at the moment. The 1080 is gorgeous anyway, and no one is asking for 4k deliverables.
I regard 4K vs 1080 as the same as in audio recording, when comparing wave files and mp3. Mp3 is practical for delivery, but not a good option for original acquisition. 1080 is the default delivery option currently, but 4K is going to be the default acquisition format very soon (if not yesterday)

When I bought my first 4k camera I thought I'd never use 4K apart from for 4K photo mode, but as soon as I saw the results from 4K videi on the timeline rendered to 1080 output, coupled with the potential to reframe (including perfect slow pans and zoom crawls) with minimal loss, I instantly switched, even though my present editing system can barely cope (reminds me of the early days of trying to edit AVCHD).

Quick review of G7

I went ahead and bought a G7 this week, and used it as an A-Cam for my wedding shoot this weekend. I had previously been using a hacked GH2 and felt the G7 upgrade was a good step I needed to take. I am extremely impressed with this camera. Functionally I used mostly 1080p at 24fps and 60fps in AVDHD. I did shoot a few clips in 4K just to try it out, but not very many. After reviewing some of the footage I'm very impressed by the clarity of the image and the dynamic range. I shot some of the reception (specifically when I shot 60fps) at 3200 and 6400 ISO. The images appear to still be very clean. I did have a weird experience where the camera refused to turn off and I had to eject the battery to restart it. Hoping that was a fluke thing and not something to watch out for. I'll try to post a little video later this week and maybe a few screen shots, but so far I'm more than impressed with this camera.

So far, the few samples I've seen online show no problems with moire or aliasing (in 4K mode). Is that your findings so far as well?

Moire is worse than in the GH4 - confirmed here.....

I say again - there is no reason for them using scaling on this other than to protect GH4 sales. Frustrating. Not a deal breaker as clearly the difference is tiny though.

Seeing the very high iso tests on the camera labs test and Brandons low light video on here makes me think I will be getting this camera after all.

Gotta be better than the Canon 6D though.

Also, on paper that might be true but I've found about 4 clips (was able to download the files from a couple of them) that show little to no aliasing or moire - very similar to the GH4.

The RAW photos look to be fairly OK up to 800 ISO and not so good higher.

Would be curious to hear from G7 owners if they can compare images from the G7 to the G5/6. The G7 samples in the Cameralabs review make me wonder if there's been any improvement over the G5/6. ???

I was looking on personal-view and saw this:

g7 1.jpgg7 2.jpg

So how is he selling a G7 without recording limits? I thought all models (NTSC & Pal) had the 29 min recording limit? Can anyone clarify this because I would like to purchase a G7 but the recording limits for live events in MP4 & 4k is a deal breaker.

Damn - Has Vitaly cracked the firmware to do this then? REALLY hope he realeases this publically if so. He does mention in the comments that he can't guarantee it continuing to work depending on future Panasonic firmware updates... so it sounds like he has found a loophole in the 1.0 version - but future upgrades might close it down.

I considered G7 as a second to GH4 camera for event videography.

I liked firmware and the fact that I can set the same color profile on both GH4 and G7. I did not mind lack of weatherproofing. And rely liked how light the body is.

There are showstoppers however:
- recording duration limited to 30min
- It is impossible to replace flash card and/or battery while the camera is on a tripod - both reside in one compartment on the bottom which is very close to a mounting 1/4-20 hole. Battery life is worse than GH4 but not that bad.
- the 1/4-20 mounting hole is a part of a relatively small plate - you can see where it is attached to a plastic body. As a result, even when mounted on a tripod, the body of the camera flexes when I operate different buttons. I can see in the footage!

My takeout - GH4 rocks! G7 goes back.

Hi

I've had several requests to add the G7 to my rolling shutter table. If you have a G7 and you'd like to know how good rolling shutter is, compared to other cameras, you can shoot a test clip following the instructions there and I'll take the measurements and add them to the table. Thanks.
