GH3 G6...iso 3200

It looks so much cleaner than gh2 i'm having hard time believing they share the same sensor. From what I see I'd say it's the same sony sensor gh3 uses :p

..it's not mine but if you go to vimeo, looks like he did this test for someone who requested it, so he will probably be willing to do yours. I agree...it looks quite usable.

I have the new G6. Its a really nice little camera, but it's not a very sensitive sensor. It's not as sensitive as the Canon APS-C sensors. It has great noise reduction at Iso 1600 and 3200 but it's about a stop darker in the same light as my T3i.

It is going to take some super fast lenses in low light and to achieve shollow depth of field given the much larger 2.2x crop factor.

1080-60p mp4 files are awesome though :)

To my understanding the Aps-C ae 1.6 crop, the GH2 is 1.866 and the GH3 is 2.0. So you are saying this new G6 is 2.2 crop?

I am mistaken. I had read somewhere that the crop was 2.19x on the new non-variable aspect sensor. After watching my comparisons between the 1.6x aps-c crop and the G6 crop I assumed what I thought I'd read was true.

Tonight I actually compared 24mm on the t3i to the G6 with the 14-42 II lens and it takes about 18.5mm to get the same field of view. If the lenses are actually correct and I can actually read the scale right that would be about 2.08x crop. So 2x is probably closer to being true.

Sorry for the confusion.

Here's a test I did with the G6 vs T3i in ETC/3X mode with the same Olympus Zuiko OM 50mm f/1.4 lens at the same distance. ISO was 3200 at f/2.8 and 1/60th on both. Looks like the crop factor is ever so slightly narrower on the G6 than 2x would suggest in ETC mode. The two cams should produce the same effective focal length in their zoom functions if their numbers are correct. That would be 240mm equivalent here.

Interesting difference between them. The G6 is in Neutral picture profile and the T3i is Flaat10p picture style. You can definitely see the difference in exposure and noise.

Crop factor is 2x only with 4:3 aspect ratio; for the GH1 and GH2 with their multi aspect ratio sensors, crop factor is 1.84x in 16:9 mode (diagonal remains 21.6mm however 16:9 ratio is about 9% wider than 4:3). For G series and GH3 it becomes 2.18x when switched to 16:9 (diagonal is reduced to 19.8mm)

That's what I had read too Gaman. In practice the actual crop I'm getting on the G6 is about 2.08x if a Canon T3i is actually 1.6x. I am using that as the reference device which may or may not be accurate.

Regardless of the exact number it is significantly tighter crop than a T3i and again significantly tighter than a GH2 in video mode. 12 and 14mm lenses are basically the standard wide with a G6. Trying to find a fast super wide is not going to be possible.

If there's enough light, the G6 is awesome. As light levels go down and ISO goes up, it loses color depth and sharpness fast. It still looks great, but just know that it has it's limits.

Cheers,
Pete

I'm looking at the G6 too, good to know your experience is quite positive with it. Someone said it feels too plasticky compared to the GH2 or G5, what is your opinion about?
Thanks.

Gaetano

It's virtually identical construction to the T3i and I've beat the tar out of in packs and bags all over the mountains for over two years now with not a single problem. I'm a plastics guy, make injection molds and mold plastic parts so it's amazingly cool to me. There ain't nothing cheap about the quality and technology in molded composite parts these days.

I bought the G6 specifically because it is the lightest cam that has ETC and ETC in 1080-60p. There's no other camera made like it. Eventually I plan to run a 12-35 f/2.8 and/or an Olympus 12mm f/2 for my hand held jib crane stabilizer work. With the Oly 12mm it's only 525 grams total !!!

I'm not fully set on using it for everything I do yet, but it's looking to be close and a no brainer for a simple, ultra light weight kit that can be taken any where, any time and get a very decent job done.

Cheers,
Pete

Really want one of these. Bummer you can't use an external monitor with it. Sorry Panasonic, you could've had my $750!
