G5 dual or single

I have the new G5 single 1.6ghz with 1gig ram.but now I am not sure if the decisicion to get this rather than the Dual 1.8 ghz particularly was wise as I will be doing a lot of video and audio rendering.I was trying to save 700 bucks for other accesories.How much speed realy am I loosing out by picking up G5's entry level.

I have a 1.8 G5 and I think it is pretty quick. I have additional 120 gig hard drive that holds all of my footage. I also have a Gig and a half of RAM but will add more later. I was going to get the Dual when it first came out but the sales person told me that it would be overkill for what I am trying to do at this point. My 1.8 is doing me justice.

Haha, that's funny! At this point? So the salesperson is suggesting that you simply drop another couple grand when you want to do more? Hehe, I love those apple people!

Anyway, you might want to google for g5 benchmarks that compare the different models (especially look for FCP render times). It probably won't be astronomically different in terms of speed. With most dual proc systems, the most you could expect is a 50% increase in speed over a single proc of the same type. However, in the real world, the difference in speed is not so huge.

You got a G5, sure, but there's always going to be newer and faster stuff coming out. Let the cognitive dissonance go and just have fun!

I've cut on the dual 2Ghz machine and the single 1.6Ghz at work - as you probably can imagine, the dual 2Ghz is just unreal... so much faster with everything. But I like the 1.6 single. I guess it really depends on how much stuff you're rendering really. If I were you, BGaS, I'd drop the $180 for two 512MB RAM cartridges. You can get them at crucial.com or memorytogo.com. Personally, I just bought the dual 1.8Ghz and it arrives tomorrow or Saturday - ROCK AND ROLL!!!!

Howdy,

I have a G5 1.8 single processor and am overall pleased with it. Looking back, I think I would have been better off with the dual because I do spend a lot of time waiting around for it to rending timelines in FCP or other apps like Live Type. I guess over the period of a year or two, $700 or so would be worth it for all the time saved! But overall, the 1.8 does what it needs to do and I am happy with it and have no plans to upgrade since I have already bought this machine. Good luck!
