FYI DVXusers: Thank you & time is running out!

ok, im brutally honest. you'll all hate me i know this but this is my review or techincal issues and everything i've lived by so far. So dont hate me it just they way I SAW IT.

ok, the story wasn't my thing, it lacked heavily on clearity and the issue of whats going on.

some shot lasted longer than they should have and other were composed to be like "what was that?"

It seemed like the person with the camera didnt know how to use the camera. like the gain switch on and off the whole time. the focus was fuzzy most of the time I saw saw of the crew left and right i even saw cables at one point. I was techincally taken out of the story.

The acting was one sided (even it seemed to go over in some parts) like one guy was doing his part and the other kinda look like he didnt care to act or he was so underacting it didnt make sense. the rock shot looked to staged.

Magic bullet is something to use in moderation if you over do it you over kill it. then again some shots look like they werent color corrected at all.

Me and my friends watched the one thing we thought was they need a new DP. granted i know you might have not been able to afford one but man it makes a difference. composition are key and i felt like only to shots were neat it in.

How much this cost to shoot? ( just curious)

I dunno, it just wasnt my cup of tea. yea i liike the twist at the end but it wasnt like an OH ending like and oEH ending.

I'm not trying to diss but i felt like it lacked more than it offered.i comend you on you selling though good job.

But it was a miss for me and five others.

Sorry if that brutal or what not. not trying to make enemies or anything just my 2 cents.

LOL,

Dude did you accidentally watch the "Making Of" and think it was the movie, hahaha!

Where did you see that -- I've never seen that in it in my 4 or 5 viewings -- you gotta time code, lol!

Sorry, but this is crackin' my **** up! Seriously do you have a time code?

I heard that at 3:37 a grip fell from the catwalks in the background and snapped his neck and you can see it if you play that part in slo mo -- just a shape falling in the back.

Also if you play side one of Dark Side of the Moon right when the movie starts, it syncs up in ways that will blow your mind!!!

LMFAO

Seriously --- gotta time code on those cables!

uh the movie is out in my car but i remeber:

the office shot with a bunch of cable in a corner as they walk in.
shadows and relfection on the car in the dolly shot. and when they walk into the bar at the end the folowin shot i saw camra guy and boom shadow.

see i know you're gonna rail on me but i observe films to a T.

I'm not going to rail on you dude, I just see it completely differently. Maybe you're looking for 100% perfection in everything you see, but from my multiple viewings I haven't seen what you have noted. Furthermore, I still believe that this story is better than 90% of the other stuff I have seen. I don't know your A/B comparison, but in my opinion, and simply my opinion, I think you're being overly critical for some unknown reason.

spidey,
Definitely don't hate you! No way. Just too bad the storyline wasn't one you could get your head around. I tried to make it as clear and sewn up in the end as I thought it could get. With BOGO I embrace and expect the "what was that?" comments, but with Hunting Camp I haven't really heard that before so this is interesting.

I knew two of those goofs, the power extension cord I left in (didn't think was critical) the other I noticed after the DVDs were made-up. I don't see any of them as disastrous however. Can't imagine too many films out there, any budget, you can't find a technical problem with at a frame by frame level of analysis. Am I right? Whether it be continuity, a shadow, a sound, a reflection, etc. For myself, if I see an extension cord or a person's coat wet then drier, it never takes me out of the movie so much that it ruins the experience.

But we don't all view films the same way, that's the great thing about feedback. Thanks for yours.

I didn't mean to rail. I just can't believe that ... but maybe the story was working well enough for me that I just didn't notice those things.

And if I know John -- he appreciates any honest feedback. So it's all good.
EDIT: I didn't see John's post before I posted this :)

I'm packing for a drive back to New Orleans tonight but I'm dying to look up those moments.

Also ...

Kubrick's 2001:
Visible crew/equipment: In the scene where the astronauts are approaching the monolith on the moon you can see the reflection of a cameraman in the visor of the first astronaut off the ramp in the close up of him walking around the monolith.

LOTR Fellowship of the Ring:
Visible crew/equipment: After Frodo looks into the mirror and sees the destruction of the Shire, Galadriel is seen riding in the swan boat across the river. Look in the background, on the left bank, a man can been seen sitting there, very faintly. As the scene progresses this crew member can be seen looking back and forth.

Citizen Kane:
Visible crew/equipment: When Kane is talking to Leland, after the campaign is over, there is a low angle shot looking up at Leland from Kane's feet. The shadow of the camera can be seen on Kane's right leg until he moves.

So I guess Huntinig Camp is in somr pretty good company, LOL.

Lastly I would like to say that there is in fact only one opinion that matters ... mine (jk)

i know what you're saying but i mean when it more visble that it shoul be it blows me away.

I am highly critical though becuase i want people to see mistakes and to improve on. i mean would you rather got another aw man awseome thing and repeatition of whats been said or a new view on story and visual content?

But the what thing wasnt about thstory, it was about some chosen shots. the clearity of the story was little hazy i mean i me and my friend knew the end was coming and were like "come on, show us something." Then ending we like becuase knew that the guy had to getting some from the girl, but didnt they both get what they wanted? why would she need to kill him or vice versa?

i dunno it just i thought you might like to hear another side that saw it.

I received my copy today. Quite quick delivery. Perfect.
I won't have time to watch it before the weekend though. :(

I haven't spoken on the forum for a while. I mostly just read and check out new stuff.
I watched this film when Spidey brought it to the office. I didn't dig it very much. It wasn't the story, it was the tech. The focus problems and a few other small things kept pulling me out of the film. Now, there is some good stuff there and I know how complicated it is to make a film. I'm not here to hack on John.

There are 2 things to always remember - Camera and Sound. Balling on a budget is hard and all of the factors that go into making a film can eat your wallet down to nothing. With that said, camera and sound should always be on point. At least those things will not fail you as long as you have them under control.

John, tape that camera to your head, brother. Learn it for all it is worth. Spend some time pulling focus and doing focus on the fly. Start to learn your ratios when it comes to lighting (American Videographers Manual - expensive, but well worth it.). Start thinking about shot to shot continuity. A video assist is often helpful as well. The DVX is a wonderful machine and It will give you what you want as long as you feed it right.

Sound was a bit spotty, but nothing to get all worked up over. Sound is always a *****.

As far as visible crew/equipment. Dude, the shadow of the op in the bar was too much. I barley noticed the others. They weren't distracting enought to ruin anything for me.

Nice work on the many locations. Damn fine work on the marketing.

Keep making stuff by all means.

One note on Kubric - remember that Kubric was a horrible profectionist. He would show one flaw per film. Check out the reflection in the bathroom dolly shot of Eyes Wide Shut. You'll see ol' Kubric sitting on the dolly behind the camera. His films were to be as India rugs. One loop in the entire rug was tied the wrong way just to prove that life is not perfect.

that's cool I didn't know that
I guess there were a few unitentional ones in the list below, and not all of the flaws have been caught in some other flicks of his yet:
kub_goofs.gif

there's more than likely inaccuracies in the above. again the source:
http://www.moviemistakes.com/

Intentional ones I know about. The others I didn't. Well, what can I say, "Roman Soldiers don't wear wristwatches." I'm of the opinion that if you look hard enough, you will find several flaws in even film ever made, with out question. I've read many a list of flaws that I thought were of the "oh, give me a break" type. You know, if you are looking that hard, you can't watch the movie. Some of the stuff said about The Coen Brothers was so silly, I thought it was a waste of print, paper and ink.

PS have you ever seen the helecoptor shadow at the begining of The Shining? Funny stuff. There is also a bathroom reflection shot in The Shining. On first pass I noticed both. That is, when I wasn't looking around my shoulder for people in pig masks

Damn, that was fast! Cool! I'm patiently awaiting your thoughts on it...

briceman,
your package has been mailed, I sent you an email as well - THANKS!

everyone play nice. Opinions are opinions and we have our right to be a critic.. Just dont take it too far and start attacking each other.

extras

extras

Since we are getting down to the wire here, and I haven't gotten many comments about the extras in the package (soundtrack, HC and BOGO features), I thought I would post a not-so-subtle hint to finding the Easter Eggs on the HC DVD:

In the menus try selecting the words "HUNTING CAMP"

Happy hunting!

Bought through Amazon? That bumps the cost up right from the get-go. Sold by Amazon (you supply the DVDs), and they take 55%. Sold via CustomFlix and the seller is out $7+ per.

I've been looking at DVD duplicators/printers....ouch.

No matter what you do, it's a pain in the butt.

GenJerDan,

Your post kinda got buried in the mix and I just came across it again this morning...I think it's an important subject you guys touched on. Nice little run-down you have here. I looked at everything available that I could find back in January, this is the way I went, if you guys care to know...Now keep in mind that I had 2 disc sets, not just a single DVD set (although the CDs aren't nearly as much as the DVDs).

Hunting Camp package at CustomFlix
(not to sell the discs, just to manufacture them, I self-distributed):

(500) DVD-5 Replication cost: $1,490 (2.98 per disc)
Dual Amaray Cases: $325 (.65 per case)
Total Shipping: $186.96 (UPS Ground)
Print Proofs: $130
(500) CD cost: $315 (.63 per disc)
Bar code and Shrink Wrap included (although they forgot the bar code hence the barcode stickers I had to stick on them all myself, oh well)

TOTAL: $2.446.96

I ordered 500 sets, the price drops to $1.77/ per disc when ordering 1,000 but I didn't think I could move that many on a first film.

DiscMakers came in closest at $2,620 for the same package with shipping.

If you guys have any questions about the process let me know, I had nothing but good experiences with CustomFlix, they emailed me regularly with updates and replied back almost immediately with each question I had, and were really helpful with last minute issues...

There was a barcode? Where? Where? You mean I didn't have to type all that info in myself?

Hmmm...searching by title, I came up with this: Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen: You're Invited to Mary-Kate & Ashley's Camp Out Party.

That better not be right. :engel017:

he he!

DEFINITELY not right, as Hunting Camp was actually the sequel to "Camp Out Party".

Dan, just curious, did you get yours yet? Oh and the barcode was a sticker on the back of the wrapping for the set.
